With the growing number of librarians in Nigeria embracing and contributing to open knowledge projects such as Wikipedia and sister projects and taking up leadership positions within the Wikimedia movement, the same cannot be said of academic librarians and staff of the University of Lagos Library as no formal Wikipedia training has been carried for staff to effectively contribute to Wikimedia projects like their counterpart in Nigeria.
With the 1Lib1Ref 2026 in University of Lagos Library and library, we aim to build Wiki-Skills for both the academic staff and library students of the University of Lagos; improve the quality, reliability, and visibility of Lagos related knowledge on Wikipedia. The University Library being one of the oldest repository of knowledge within the country houses numerous archival resources and historical sources that can used to improve Wikipedia pages relating to Lagos State and Nigeria in general.
To address these challenges, we will organize two training workshops and an edit-a-thon for staff and library students of the University of Lagos Library. These activities will enable librarians and library students to learn how to identify, cite, and add reliable references to Wikipedia. It will also serves as avenue for the University Library Management to upload their Public Records and sources Wikimedia Commons for global visibility and access to some of their collections.

The following activities are our planned line of action:
- Awareness and Recruitment: There will be awareness and partnership building to promote the institution. Promote the campaign using social media platforms and existing communication platforms for staff and students of the University of Lagos Library.
- Onboarding and Introduction to Wikipedia and sister projects: The onboarding session will serve as an introduction to the Wikimedia space, focusing on Wikipedia, Five Pillars and Content Policy. Ensuring that participants understand the goals, expectations, and tools required for successful engagement.
- Training Sessions – Training will be both online and in-person. Training Workshops to be facilitated by experienced wikimedians and involve offering practical training on: Wikipedia editing basics, adding references to Wikipedia using the citation hunt tool, sourcing reliable references, and improving Wikipedia article. An online training and follow up Office Hours on their editing skills, challenges and offers support if any. The online training will help to enhance the participants editing skills and address challenges that they may be having.
Edit-a-thon – Practical editing experience will be provided to focused on adding references to wikipedia articles, improving the visibility of Lagos State’s cultural heritage , ensuring participants actively contribute to Wikimedia platforms.

- Atibrarian is an experienced wikimedian, a fellow of the Wikipedia in African Libraries (WikiAfLIB), and a certified trainer of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program. He is the Founder of Wikimedia Gombe Network a vibrant Wikimedia community in Nigeria. He is the recipient of the 2025 awards for the Community Builder of the Year from the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. He will be leading this project at the institution.
- AfricanLibrarian is an experienced Wikimedian and trainer who has led over 20 Wikimedia training and taught over 2000 editors. Presently, she works with AfLIA (African Library and Information Associations and Institutions) with headquarters in Accra, Ghana as the Director, Human Capacity and Training. She is an ardent advocate for open knowledge as a pathway for inclusivity and boosting innovative solutions to development challenges that bedevil Africa. She has been the project lead for AfLIA’s projects with OER Africa, NBA South Africa, Book Aid International and Wikimedia Foundation. In 2022, she won the global award of the Wikimedian of the Year 2022, (Newcomer category). She will be available to facilitate online for the training and keynote speaker.
- User Omorodion1 is a digital ibrarian, Wikimedian and Co-founder of the Port Harcourt Wikimedia Hub. He has organized and facilitated several Wikimedia events in Nigeria and beyond, including organizing a Wikibase workshop for librarians. He participated in the maiden Organizer Lab course by the Wikimedia Foundation. He will be an online facilitator.
- Jerry minor He is the Head of the Medical Library at the University of Port Harcourt and a Wikimedian who has organised and facilitated Wikimedia programmes and trainings within and outside Rivers State, Nigeria. He is the co-founder of the Port Harcourt Wikimedia Hub, which is an informal Wikimedia group housing students and staff from higher institutions in Rivers State and nearby states who have been trained on Wikimedia projects by the team. He is also a member of the Wikimedia Rivers Network and was a participant in the Wiki Education’s Scholars and Scientists programme.
- Kaizenify is the Program Director of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. He will serving as a volunteer trainer for the project.

The target audience are the academic staff of the University of Lagos Library and and library students of the University of Lagos. This being a novel initiative with the University will go a long way in improving their skills and knowledge Open Knowledge platforms and contributions to serve a common goal of making reliable, accurate and verifiable information are consumed by information seekers

The General friendly space policy for Wikimedia events will be summarized and read at the beginning of each event. The event will adhere to the Wikimedia-friendly space policy during the event. The Wikimedia-friendly space policy and UCoC will be distributed to participants before the event starts. The event also promises to be safe and conducive.
I will ensure the physical events comply with all local laws and regulations that apply to the young attendees.
