2024/2025 Wikipedian Info Video for Community Engagement

5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

Not applicable WikiPortraits

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Our video promotional materials for intro Wikipedians are somewhat out of date.

When WikiPortraits did public engagement at Sundance and SXSW, there was a need for a video to run on loop on a projector in the background, during the photos shoots and during editathons. But the organizers didn’t have a totally up-to-date video, nor one with snazzy infographics showing Wikipedia stats. Instead, we used one 26-minute video from 2018 that was a mashup of other videos. It wasn’t very useful when the sound is on silent since it is not consistently subtitled.

We need a more up-to-date information video about Wikipedia that highlights some of the fun facts on Wikipedia, and also highlights editors. It should be designed to engage the Wikicurious, inform the public, and convey information even when the sound is off.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The team will create a 4-5 minute informational video about English-language Wikipedia (and beyond!) that can be used in public engagement activities, including edit-a-thons and conferences. Our interviews about “Why I Contribute to Wikipedia/Wikimedia” will be conducted at WikiConference North America and New York City.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
  • John Sears (User:Johnsearsmedia): John is the primary videographer and editor for the project, having served as an active WikiPortraits contributor and a videographer for past WikiConferences. He has accumulated B-roll over the years. PAID.
  • Ariela Ortiz (User:Arielaortizb): Ariela is an Orlando-based multimedia artist who initially designed the WikiPortraits logo as well as numerous design assets for the project for use at SXSW. She was born in Costa Rica and speaks fluent Spanish. She has shot photos for Wikiportraits at SXSW 2024 and Cannes 2024. She has also worked on the extensive list of the more than 300 artists in the main exhibit of the Venice Biennale. GRAPHIC DESIGNER. PAID.
  • Kevin Payravi (User:SuperHamster): Kevin has contributed to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites since 2007, and is currently a co-organizer of WikiConference North America and Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. He also serves on the Board of Wikimedia DC. He has served as a photographer for WikiPortraits at Sundance, SXSW, and Cannes. VOLUNTEER.
  • Andrew Lih (en:User:Fuzheado): Andrew Lih is one of the world's experts on Wikipedia and the Wikimedia movement in both the academic space and multimedia production. He is an avid contributor of professional portrait photographs to Wikimedia Commons, accounting for more than 5 million monthly views. He has photographed high-impact events for Commons, such as the Pulitzer Prize awards, the National Book Festival, and the Hay Festival of Books. ADVISER. VOLUNTEER.
  • Jennifer 8. Lee (User:Jenny8lee): has worked on a number of Wikipedia-related video projects, including a good one for WikiConference North America in 2019 and WikiCred. ADMIN. VOLUNTEER.
9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

There are two main target populations for this project:

The public, or Wikicurious individuals. This is meant to be a snazzy informational video for people who go through Wikipedia-themed spaces, such as at Sundance, SXSW, or elsewhere. Participants in editathons or trainings who are already in the Wikipipeline, but want to know more. The video can point them in the right direction to deepen their knowledge.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

No

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Read more here.

N/A

11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

When WikiPortraits did a studio at Sundance, where 300 people had their photos taken, we realized we needed something for our projection screen, but we only had a 26 minute video from 2018. This was also a problem for Wikipedia Day Utah, and WikiPortraits Studio in SXSW as well.

After these frustrations, the group looked to John Sears, a WikiPortraits contributor who has also been to WikiConference North America. He has accumulated a decent amount of B-roll from the conference and the Wikitrain ride up. The group has calculated that we would be able to produce something with relatively high production quality within the Rapid Grant budget if we used volunteers to help write the script.
