Globally, women lack equal access to opportunities as their male counterparts. And this has formed the premise of the marginalization and exclusion of women in society. It demobilizes women, leaving some to feel like lesser beings who do not amount to anything or possess any value add. This also affects their psyche and eventually every aspect of their lives. However, it is imperative to empower women and build their capacity in order to improve their worth and give them a voice to express themselves and actively engage decision making processes. This underscores our mission to leverage the 2025 International Women's Day to inspire the women and stimulate their minds to be assertive, vocal, participatory, ready and confident to engage and actively contribute to open knowledge. Many women are inherently gifted and have great value to add, but exclusion makes them lose their inner strength and limits their potential. While this is also the situation in Nigeria, there is increasing need to target women with the opportunity to engage the Wikimedia space which presents an open, free, and safe space for women to engage and actively contribute to open knowledge. There is an opportunity to intentionally engage the Wikimedia community and promote equity and equality in the community. Although extensive research will be needed to adequately inform strategic interventions, an initial engagement will significantly contribute to empowering women and increasing women’s engagement in the Wikimedia community and contribution to open knowledge.
Against this background, this project will focus on:
Capacity Building and acceleration of women’s voices on the Wiki spaces
This project seeks to build the capacity of women to actively engage and contribute to Wikimedia platforms, both online and offline. With a focus on self-worth, confidence-building and the transformative power of free knowledge, this initiative will inspire women to become active contributors to Wikimedia. The underrepresentation of women editors and the lack of content about women on Wikimedia platforms like Wikiquote and Wikidata highlight a pressing need for action. To close this gap, the project will empower women to tell their own stories, document their achievements, and amplify their voices in the digital knowledge ecosystem. To promote an inclusive community of women contributors to Wikimedia, this project will enrich Wikimedia’s content and advance gender equity in knowledge sharing. Women supporting and representing other women will ensure a lasting impact, build a richer and more balanced repository of information. This initiative for women by women resonates with the season of the International Women’s Day and the 2025 campaign theme, 'Accelerate Action'. This is how we collectively Accelerate Action for gender equality. The project activities will be implemented within the IWD 2025 campaign season to #AccelerateAction.
Women’s Upskilling and Digital Literacy through Online/Onsite Training:
Participants will receive comprehensive training, both online and onsite, on contributing to Wikidata and Wikiquote. This training will leverage curated lists and queries on notable women, enabling participants to create, edit, and improve valuable content. As the women actively engage in creating free knowledge, they will expand their understanding of the importance of representation and recognize the power of their voices in shaping narratives and influencing decision-making spaces. This initiative goes beyond skill-building; it empowers participants to become catalysts for change. Training these women will enhance their digital literacy and ability to share information effectively with their peers. Research consistently shows, empowering women creates a multiplier effect that benefits families, communities, and societies at large. It also fosters a sense of pride and visibility, where participants feel represented and inspired by a vibrant women community. By equipping women with these tools, this program will significantly increase the number of female editors on Wikimedia space, closing the gender gap in contributors and content. The collective efforts of these women will amplify women’s voices, enrich Wikimedia’s knowledge base, and create a more inclusive space for diverse perspectives. This contribution will ensure that women’s stories and achievements are acknowledged and preserved for future generations.

To ensure a successful project implementation, proper planning, coordination and documentation has commenced and is ongoing. Before the activity on International Women’s Day (IWD) opens, we will create awareness on the social media platforms from February 2025, projecting the theme for the 2025 IWD and connecting to Wikimedia. The event will also be promoted on the print and electronic media as well as on the Wiki spaces. The planned activities include:
One general online launch for the kick-starting of the project and updates: This online launch would commence the beginning of the project and would converge all the members from the 4 participating communities. It will also feature a keynote speaker from a gender advocate. It would also intimate the participants on the timeline and activities of the project.
Four physical trainings/sessions to celebrate International Women’s Day (Abuja, Kaduna, Imo & Anambra): An onsite event will be carried out in the 4 participating communities. During these physical sessions, Project leads and their co-facilitators would train and engage the participants in creating/improving WikiData items about gender activists/organisations. Also, these participants would be trained in curating, creating and improving quotes from notable women on the selected language Wikiquote. The essence of adopting this approach is to ensure that each community leads establish close contact and direct communication with their participants. This will ensure that there is a proper one-on-one interaction between the local organizers and participants.
Four online trainings/sessions (Abuja, Kaduna, Imo & Anambra): In addition to the designated communication channels, the four participating communities will organise an online session, respectively, where participants will be followed up and also taught the best practices for contributing to the targeted Wiki project. This would be an avenue to recall and re-demonstrate what was carried out during the physical event. It will also be an opportunity to tackle some of the challenges participants faced in contributing to the project. Edit-a-thon and translate-a-thon: The Edit-a-thon would run independently in the four participating communities. This would give the respective communities time to focus and attend to their participants. The community would be responsible for overseeing the outcome of the edit-a-thon and shortlisting the winners, respectively.
Review: The Review process would be done at the community level. Each community would be responsible for providing 2 reviewers (Wikiquote and WikiData) for their community contribution. One general online closure and winners announcement: With the various communities shortlisting their winners respectively, the online session would see the winners' announcement and sharing of feedback and finally, the end of the project.
