Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Advancing Nigeria’s Cultural Heritage Preservation (ANCHoR) (ID: 23546631)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
1. Awareness Creation: The project focused on creating awareness of Wikimedia projects particularly Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons, as its primary objective. Awareness activities targeted cultural practitioners and custodians, local communities, cultural organizations, historians, and individuals passionate about heritage preservation and nation building. Outreach was conducted across online and social media platforms, cultural and historian group forums, as well as through physical engagement
2. Training and Recruitment: Over 50 participants were successfully recruited and trained during the project. Comprehensive and well-structured training sessions were delivered to the recruited participants through a combination of physical workshops and virtual training sessions, equipping them with the necessary skills to contribute effectively to Wikimedia platforms.
3. Content Creation and Enhancement (Edit-a-thon): Content creation and enhancement were carried out through organized Edit-a-thon activities, during which participants created new content and improved existing articles and added media files related to Nigeria’s cultural heritage on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. These activities helped to bridge existing content gaps, as participants actively contributed to enriching articles, structured data, and media files across the Wikimedia platforms.
4. Community Building: At the conclusion of the project, a sustainable community known as "Advancing Nigeria’s Cultural Heritage Preservation (ANCHoR)" was established. This community serves as a platform for continued collaboration, learning, and engagement beyond the lifespan of the project. The link to the community group has been provided in the designated section.
5. Sustainability and Continuity: To ensure long-term sustainability, a WhatsApp group was created for project participants. This group provides a supportive space where members can interact, build a sense of belonging, ask questions, seek guidance, share challenges, and continue learning and contributing to cultural heritage preservation initiatives well after the completion of the program.
