Advancing Wikimedia Projects in Gungbe Language: Gungbe Wikiquotes, Gungbe Wiktionary and Wikidata
- Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)
Local
- Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.
- R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
Although Africa is rich in quotes and proverbs, no active Wikiquotes exist in West African Languages and just 1 (Afrikaans) in Africa Language. Having trained and retrained editors in activating gungbe Wikipedia and gungbe Wiktionary and actualising the creation of these subdomains, I am following similar approach in activating the Gungbe Wikiquotes thus leaving a template for other African Languages to follow. In addition, participants engagement is required in Gungbe Wiktionary and Wikidata to reinforce the knowledge gained in previous project abnd to create more contents and introduce new participants to Wikimedia projects.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
Trainings/Editathon: I will organize a total of 8 series of trainings and editathons. This method has been effective in actualizing the creation of Gungbe Wikipedia and Gungbe Wiktionary subdomains. I will equally assign other repeat participants to new participants to encourage them in contributing.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
Trainings/Editathons: I will organize 4 series of trainings and editathons on contributing to Gungbe Wikiquotes in incubator. I will organize 2 series of Trainings and editathons on contributing to Gungbe Wiktionary (the subdomain guw.wiktionary.org is approved and being created and should be fully ready by the start of this project). I will equally organize 2 trainings and editathons on contributing Gungbe lexemes on Wikidata.
- 4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.
Not applicable
- 5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?
1. Samatics: I will be leading the event and act as one of the facilitator. I developed the templates and trainings on gungbe Wiktionary and I have developed the pathway for gungbe Wikiquotes and I already have experience on creating this contents in incubator.
- 2. Ydamilola: She will act as the project manager and also facilitate the events. As the only female faciliator and experienced gungbe editor, she was instrumental in making the gungbe Wiktionary a reality. She has experience in contributing to Wikidata. She took a facilitating session in a previous event to display her level of understanding. She will serve as a source of inspiration to expected female participants at the events.
- 3. Jamex18: As a gungbe speaker and experienced gungbe editor, He will assist on Communications and Logistics. He will also serve as one of the facilitator.
- 6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.
Geography, Language, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial
- 6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.
Creating contents in Gungbe Wikiquotes will help Gungbe language to have a voice in tapping from the rich African quotes and proverbs. Thus becoming one of the very few African language to have an active Wikiquotes. Contributing to Wiktionary and Wikidatqa will help to reinforce the knowlege of existing editiors nad introduce new users to Wikimedia projects.
- 7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?
The target paarticipants are gungbe speakers in Nigeria. Since this is a series of trainings and editathon, I will continue to engage the participants from my previous events by sending out articles to translate. For new participants, I will add them to the created WhatsApp group and continue to share editing tips with them. I will organize a google meet to address participants questions after the event.
- 10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?
I will share the policy online and offline with the expected participants. Before each event, a brief discussion of the policy will take place. I will also provide a dedicated organizer's contact and venue security contact with participants.
