We aim to create a vibrant Wikimedia community in Jos by training residents to contribute effectively to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. Last year, a Wikimedia awareness event in Jos revealed significant interest in contributing, but many attendees lacked the technical skills to participate. Since then, eager individuals have reached out for guidance, prompting this project to equip them with the necessary tools and foster a sustainable support network.
The primary challenges include limited awareness that Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, even among interested individuals, and a lack of foundational skills for editing articles, uploading media, or contributing structured data to Wikidata. Additionally, the absence of a local Wikimedia community means newcomers often struggle alone, leading to disengagement.
To address this, we will organize hands-on training sessions focused on editing, media uploads, and Wikidata contributions. Beyond training, we’ll build a local support system through mentorship, regular meetups, and online platforms for ongoing collaboration. This dual approach ensures participants gain practical skills while connecting with peers, transforming initial interest into long-term engagement.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
We're planning a series of activities to get a vibrant Wikimedia community going in Jos. It's going to be a mix of online and offline events spread over several days, designed to get as many people involved and learning as possible.
First, we'll be doing a three-day awareness tour, visiting different spots around Jos to introduce Wikimedia projects to all sorts of people – students, professionals, anyone who's interested. We'll be talking about why free knowledge is so important and how everyone can play a part in building it through Wikimedia.
Before the main training, we'll have a one-day online meetup. This will be a chance for everyone who's interested to get together, meet each other, and for us to get a sense of what people already know about Wikimedia. We can also use this time to talk about what the training will cover and answer any initial questions.
The heart of the project will be a two-day, in-person training session. This is where participants will get hands-on experience editing Wikipedia, contributing to Wikidata, and uploading content to Wikimedia Commons. Experienced Wikimedians will be there to guide everyone through the process, making sure they have the skills they need to contribute confidently.
Finally, we'll have another online meetup after the in-person training. This will be a chance to check in with everyone, see how they're doing, help with any challenges they're running into, and encourage them to keep contributing. We want to make sure that people stay engaged and continue to grow the Wikimedia community in Jos long after the training is over.

- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
Our target participants are students, young professionals, and knowledge enthusiasts in Jos, many of whom showed interest during our previous Wikimedia awareness project. We will engage them through social media, university networks, and an online meetup before the training. The sessions will be hands-on, covering Wikipedia editing, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. Afterward, we will create an online support group and hold a follow-up session to track progress, answer questions, and encourage continued contributions. Our goal is to build a lasting Wikimedia community in Jos.
