Aerial photography is a technique for capturing images of geographical earth surfaces, designated landscapes, or objects from above land surfaces in order to create an atmospheric, unique top view of the earthlandscape or objects for documentation or knowledge purposes.
In terms of aerial photography and the project we intend to carry out, we planned to capture aerial images of three northern Nigerian states in order to bridge the gap created by the lack of aerial photographs on their respective Wikimedia pages, particularly on Wikipedia and Wikitravel. The project seeks to provide a technical discipline and a workflow for Wikimedians and editors to acquire skills on how to capture aerial photographs using drone cameras as a tool, the aerial images that will be edited to have an appropriate appearance to be used worth encyclopedic to bridge the gap of unavailability of aerial images in Nigerian related content in three Northern Nigerian states, which include Kaduna State, Kano State, and Katsina State, and to improve A total of 750 images will be captured, with 250 aerial photos from each state.
Brief survey to assess the impact of Wikimedia pages in three northern Nigerian states.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Aerial_photography_in_three_Northern_Nigerian_States.
Aerial photos in these three states (Kaduna, Kano, and Katsina) are completely missing, with no aerial photographs on their respective Wikimedia pages, so this project intends to capture those images to impact the following categories here https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Aerial_photography_in_three_Northern_Nigerian_States. that are related to the aforementioned states. The images will have a significant impact because they will link to relevant Wikimedia pages. Looking at the shared categories, you can see that they lack Ariel images. This page also includes a survey of Wikimedians on Ariel Photography in Nigeria to gather information and opinions on how we can improve and grow aerial photography in Nigeria.
This project will be considered an Aerial photography 0.1 aimed at three northern Nigerian states with the purpose of capturing 750 images 250 for each state, to be used worth encyclopedic in Nigerian related Wikimedia pages in Wikipedia and Wikivoyage, and to showcase other photographers on aerial photographing uploads into Wikimedia, as well as to mentor interested participants/editors that are contributing in Wikimedia Commons with skills and means of aerial photography.
Aerial photography is an important type of photography that captures and depicts locations from various perspectives. After reviewing aerial photography in Nigeria within the Wikimedia ecosystem, we have seen less Ariel Images in Nigerian related contents (Wikimedia pages) and an insufficient number of Ariel images in Wikimedia Commons that can be used worth encyclopedic. As part of moving Wikimedia forward by providing free access to knowledge for everyone, we plan to bring a change in Ariel photography to help shape free access to knowledge by bridging the gap of aerial photography in Nigeria. The change we are attempting to bring is the capture of images of prominent locations in three Nigerian northern states: Kaduna, Katsina, and Kano.
As an experienced editor and photographer who has been working on photography-related projects for the Wikimedia ecosystem for the past six years, I have a well-thought-out plan to advance Ariel photography in the Wikimedia movement by enlisting Wikimedia collaborators and other photographers to mentor Nigerian Wikimedians and editors in image capture.
What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? The challenges or problems here that we are trying to solve is to bring in aerial photography in Nigerian related pages and topics in Wikimedia sister projects at large, seeing that most Nigerian articles and pages lack aerial photography, which we as photographers believe that is essential is to have every type of photography (images) in Nigerian related articles and pages, types of images like Macro photography, Panaroma photography, aerial photography, landscape photography, perspective photography, and other different types of photography that aim to create an image in different size, view or appearances. So, using aerial photography, this project seeks to address the following issues.
- Capture 750 images to address the lack of aerial photography in Nigerian-related pages and articles covering three Northern Nigerian states. The project aims to highlight Wikimedians who are passionate about aerial photography and contribute to Wikimedia Commons by creating aerial images for Nigerian-related content. The project plans to include different types of photographic images that varies in appearance, view, sizes, and lighting to help see that every image is included in an article as a means of shaping free access to knowledge with different kinds of images, each delivering a unique information to readers and knowledge seekers, because good images tell good stories, so this aerial photography is one that will shape this angle of aerial photographing in Nigerian related content.
- Improve visual appeal: The visual appearance of aerial images in the three aforementioned states would increase page views and audience due to the breathtaking view and appearance of the aerial images.
- Enhancing the accuracy of geographical information: aerial images improve visibility of images by showing accurate geographical views from aerial view. As it shows wide range of places like many houses and neighborhood.
- Support education and research: aerial photos are used in education and research programs related to geography and landscaping, the aerial images as a free license images will be used for educational purposes.
Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required) The approach for this project to provide the changes on aerial photography in three Northern Nigerian States and to solve the problem to unavailability of aerial images is divided into three different parts as follows:
- Aerial photographic tour: this approach will travel to various cities to capture stunning images of landmarks, cities, buildings, historic monuments, and bustling streets. Other iconic places include bridges, waterfalls, and mountains. We planned the tour with two Lanscape photography experts, so tour experience is required. During the tour, we will organise aerial photography sessions for participants and photographers, as well as drone flight briefings with aerial photography tips and safety guidelines. During the tour, we would also use high-quality cameras to capture stunning, exceptional images worthy of an encyclopedia.
- Edith-a-thon on aerial photography:in this approach we will organize a training where aerial photography will be introduce and explained. Participants and editors will receive theoretical training in aerial photography, including a session that will explain the importance of aerial images in the Wimimedia movement, as well as their applications and usage. During the training, aerial images will be uploaded and linked to appropriate pages in accordance with Wikimedia Commons' uploading and licensing guidelines.
- Wikimedia activity workflow worth encyclopedic: This is an important part of the approach in which participants will engage in reviewing aerial images from previous training to make them worth encyclopedic into other languages Wikis, with the goal of uploading their own images as part of what they have learned from the previous training.
