We are seeking to ensure the accurate representation of African history and experience. Ensuring a more inclusive and diverse knowledge by writing our history in local languages. Create awareness about the importance of reparations and justice for Africans. Bridging knowledge gaps.
We aim to solve the problem of limited content on African history and experiences on Wikipedia, especially content in local languages. We want to tell our stories as Africans because no one can tell our stories better than us.
- We want to create awareness because of the lack of understanding on how to address past wrongs such as slavery, as it has been in the past.
Our approaches are to:
- Create African history content which are of high quality in our local languages.
- Engage with volunteers, community leaders, and historical experts to ensure accurate representation.
- Organize workshops, where resources and training will be provided to promote awareness about reparations and justice.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
As part of the Africa Wik Challenge, we plan to participate in various capacity-building sessions to enhance wikimedians skills in creating and improving content related to African history, culture, development, struggles and experiences. Our focus will be on developing and localizing contents in local languages such as Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, and Tyap in order to ensure that the information is culturally relevant and easily understood by diverse audiences.
Local community leaders from different Wikimedia communities in Nigeria, including Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, and Tyap will organize editing, translating, and writing activities to engage participants. These activities will include in-person and online training sessions, tailored to the specific needs of each community, with the goal of creating high-quality content in Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, and Tyap Wikipedia .
The Africa Wiki Challenge provides an opportunity for us to showcase African narratives, promote justice and reparations, and amplify African voices. Through this initiative, we aim to significantly boost the representation of African content on Wikipedia and promote a more inclusive and diverse knowledge base. In the light of this, these communities representing the major tribes in Nigeria would be organising 1 in-person event each, and 2 online trainings each to build content and knowledge relating to colonialism, historical injustice, slavery, and systemic exploitation in Africa, and most importantly in Nigeria.
There will also be 3 general online training sessions for all participating communities in Nigeria, to enhance effective collaboration and partnership in the Africa Wiki Challenge events.
