Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
Africa Wiki Challenge 2025 in Nigeria spanned a month ( https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Event:Africa_Wiki_Challenge_2025_in_Nigeria/Home) with four communities: Hausa, Igbo, Tyap, and Yoruba. Since our proposed budget was slashed into half, we had to revisit our budget, adjusted to the amount funded. The Challenge focused on the theme: Reclaiming our Narrative:Justice for Africans and the Diaspora through Reparations . During this one month, the four communities organized both in-person events and online sessions to create awareness, introduce participants to the challenge, teach them how to make contributions to Wikimedia projects. For this challenge, we focused on Wikipedia and Wikidata. There was an online launch where all the participants from the four communities were introduced to Africa Wiki Challenge. The focus was translating articles to the four participating languages on Wikipedia, creating items related to restitution, reparation, stolen African artifacts, sculptures especially the ones from Nigeria, the cultural activists , curators, organizations involved in reparation efforts. There were also creation and editing of items on Wikidata. The implemented activities were divided into 3: The project team organized a virtual launch, while each community organized two online sessions, and a physical event.

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: 1. The effect of multiple collaboration on established AWC . 2. What becomes of a new community after hosting a successful first event 3. Impact of mentoring in project organizing and coordination. 4. Bridging the gap by creating more African articles 5. Improved skill in article creation and knowledge of Africa history
1. The effect of multiple collaborations on established AWC: The project saw the Wikimedia Communities in Nigeria excel through collaborations that boosted local language content and skills through edit-a-thons. Despite coordination and resource challenges, these partnerships enriched Nigerian languages Wikipedia presence. 2. What becomes of a new community after hosting a successful first event: Hosting a successful event together with different communities involved for the very first time shows this is worthy of emulation, and we look forward to working together in future projects, and even with more communities. 3. Impact of mentoring in project organizing and coordination: The participating communities thrived in the Africa Wiki Challenge 2025, gaining global recognition, stronger unity, enhanced skills, and momentum for growth. These were made possible through timely mentoring sessions, which were key to the Nigerian Wikimedians’ success in the campaign, streamlining project organisation, enhancing collaboration across Hausa, Igbo, Tyap, and Yoruba communities, building skills, and sustaining engagement. 4. Bridging the gap by creating more African articles : The AWC 2025 exceeded expectations for Nigerian Wikimedians, with a combined contribution of over 6,800 new articles and over 20,000 improved articles, enriching African content in local languages.
5. Improved skill in article creation and knowledge of African history: The Africa Wiki Challenge (AWC) 2025 significantly advanced Nigerian Wikipedia editors' skills in article creation and knowledge of African history, and deepened their understanding through mastering Wikipedia editing and local language translations.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
The event was well-executed although we encountered some challenges in terms of finances because the project was based on collaboration between four language communities in Nigeria (Igbo, Hausa, Tyap and Yoruba). Our proposed budget was slashed by almost 50% where the amount funded was half of the proposal, this affected our initial plans but we were able to readjust our activities based on funds available. Overall, everything went well without any problem.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
The project catches the eyes of the wikimedian community not just in Nigeria, but within the West African region because our activities have been in the public right from the very first day of launch to the final day, with a wider social media presence, we also created a diff post ( https://diff.wikimedia.org/2025/07/13/amplifying-african-voices-through-the-africa-wiki-challenge-in-nigeria-2025/) to reach a wider audience. All organizers that represented the four communities are to go back to their communities to share what has been learnt through this joint collaboration with their community members and even beyond their communities.
