Africa Wiki Challenge 2025 in Osun is focused on closing critical knowledge gaps and increasing online representation around the theme “Reclaiming our Narrative: Justice for Africans and the Diaspora through Reparation.” This initiative seeks to amplify African and diasporic voices, histories and experiences on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms.

The main challenge: There is currently limited online information that reflects Africa’s struggles, demands and progress around reparations and justice for both Africans on the continent and in the diaspora. This lack of representation weakens global understanding of historical injustices and ongoing efforts toward repair and justice.

Approaches:

Community contribution: The Challenge invites participants across Africa, especially in Osun, to create or improve Wikipedia articles and media related to reparations, historical injustices, resistance movements and justice initiatives for Africans and the diaspora. A contest will be launched to engage anyone interested with further details to be provided. Capacity building: Ahead of the contest participants will be trained through in-person workshops to equip them with the skills to contribute effectively while aligning with the Challenge’s goals. By expanding content on these topics, the Challenge aims to:

Educate the world: Offer a richer, more accurate picture of Africa’s historical and contemporary fight for justice and reparations. Empower African voices: Provide a platform for Africans and diasporic communities to share their perspectives, histories and demands. Improve Wikipedia: Strengthen the quality, accuracy and diversity of content on Africa-related topics. Key strategies include:

Raising awareness: Organize workshops and outreach campaigns to inform communities in Osun and beyond about the Challenge and the importance of Wikipedia editing. Encouraging participation: Partner with local institutions, universities and cultural organizations to involve students, educators, researchers and activists. Facilitating contribution: Provide hands-on training on Wikipedia editing skills and best practices to ensure participants not only create articles but also meet high-quality standards.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. An online forum or social media group will be set up specifically for participants in Osun. This space will serve to:

Share progress: Participants can post links to their contributions and receive feedback from other editors Ask questions: A dedicated online facilitator will address queries or challenges during the editing process Foster motivation and knowledge exchange: Participants can share experiences, best practices and newly uncovered information related to reparations and justice 3.
