The Africa Wiki Challenge seeks to address the persistent gaps in African content representation on Wikimedia platforms. Many topics related to Africa, including its history, culture, notable figures, and key events, remain underrepresented or poorly documented. Additionally, there is limited participation from local contributors, leading to a lack of diverse perspectives and locally sourced knowledge. Existing articles often suffer from poor quality, lack proper citations, or contain biased narratives, reducing their credibility and impact. Our key findings reveal that many Wikipedia articles, particularly on Swahili Wikipedia, are either stubs or lack essential multimedia elements such as videos and photos. Our key findings indicate that many articles categorized under Universities in Tanzania on Swahili Wikipedia (Jamii: Vyuo vikuu vya Tanzania) are stubs and require significant expansion. These articles often lack comprehensive information about the universities’ history, academic programs, notable alumni, and contributions to society. This absence of visual content not only limits reader engagement but also reduces the credibility and comprehensiveness of the articles. High-quality images and videos play a crucial role in providing visual context, making information more accessible and impactful. Addressing this gap is essential for enriching Swahili Wikipedia and ensuring that knowledge about Africa is well-documented, visually represented, and easily understood by a wider audience.
After successfully hosting the Africa Wiki Challenge 2024, which can be seen here: [Africa Wiki Challenge 2024 Tanzania Contributions](https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Global_WikiEducation_Initiative/Africa_Wiki_Challenge_2024_in_Tanzania), we are excited to continue locally this year under the theme "Smart Africa: Digital Education and Innovation." This challenge will focus on documenting and expanding knowledge about Africa’s shift towards digital learning, the role of technology in education, and innovative approaches transforming the learning experience across the continent.
To achieve this, we will organize editing workshops to train participants on contributing to Swahili Wikipedia, ensuring quality content creation. We will also engage universities (Dar Es Salaam Institute of Technology, to contribute articles and images.
A Meta page which will be found in here [1] will guide participants with suggested topics and resources, helping to generate and improve well-sourced content. Our main purpose is to bridge the knowledge gap and empower local communities with digital literacy and research skills.
