It is widely known that music is a universal language. Still, I observed that most of the content relating to African music and musicians on Wikipedia is mostly in the English language. However, only a few are represented on Wikipedia's indigenous languages spoken in Nigeria. As an indigenous language contributor, I have translated several articles relating to music and musicians on Yoruba Wikipedia. However, I realized my effort alone was insufficient to bridge the language gap. The objective of this project is to enhance music content on Wikipedia by translating and creating articles in local languages, bridging the gap between English Wikipedia and underrepresented languages in Nigeria, as well as creating Wikibook books on genres specific to Africa.
This project aims to bridge the language gap on contents relating to African music on Wikipedia which will further serve as a coverage for non-English speaking communities in Nigeria. Arguably, music is one of the components of culture. It is one of the things that describes a group of people and also serves as a representation of diverse cultural perspectives, traditions, and heritage. For example, in Nigeria, we have several genres of music like Apala, Fuji, Juju, Afrobeat, Highlife, Waka, Reggae, Urban highlife, Hip-hop, Aurrebbe, Ogene, Indigenous music, Ekpili, Ikorodo, Rara, Were, Igbo Highlife, Afro-juju, Yo-pop, and Abigbo, which are predominantly written in English language but lack presence in some of the language Wikipedia in Nigeria.
Furthermore, this project will allow non-English speakers in Nigeria who constantly face difficulties in accessing and contributing to music knowledge in Nigeria to confidently access music knowledge in their various languages and contribute to the language gap. That is, the accessibility barrier will be addressed with this project.
It is observed that there is an insufficient involvement from the Nigerian indigenous language communities in content relating to music, which I believe that this project will address. Apart from the limits in community engagement, this project will also bring about uniformity in content relating to music across Nigeria's indigenous language on Wikipedia. Such that if we have an article about a particular genre of music, like Waka or Ekpili on Igbo Wikipedia, such an article will certainly be available on Yoruba, Hausa, Tyap, Fulfulde and Igala Wikipedia respectively.
Another aim of this project is to look beyond Nigeria and translate other music-related content in several parts of Africa. For example, certain genres of music in South Africa like mbube, Isicathamiya, mbaqanga, afrofusion, amapiano, marabi, jaiva, boeremusiek, bubblegum music, maskandi, Gqom, kwaito amongst others cannot be found on Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Igala Wikipedia and other Nigerian indigenous languages Wikipedia. This project will fill the gap for missing music topics, artists and genres in Nigerian indigenous languages.
Another major goal of this project is to ensure accurate and high-quality translations of music content in Nigeria’s indigenous languages. This is highly important because lack of translation quality will hinder us from achieving the afore-mentioned goals.

1. Creating Awareness and mobilization: Creation of awareness and mobilization among academicians and students who are linguistics and language enthusiasts passionate about Nigerian languages, culture, and heritage will be one of the first planned activities for this event. To do this, we will distribute digital materials such as posters, flyers, and short videos across a variety of platforms, social media, and other online communities. A dedicated WhatsApp group will also be created for interested participants, allowing for easy communication and engagement. This multi-platform approach will ensure that we reach a wide audience and generate interest in the event.
2. Training and Recruitments: We will recruit 180 participants from the Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Tyap, Fulfulde and Igala Wikimedia communities in Nigeria, comprising 60 new editors and 120 existing editors. Similarly, we will recruit 60 other editors across each community, who will contribute to Wikidata and Wikibook. The training will be conducted by experienced trainers and facilitators who will guide participants through the process of translating, editing, improving and creating articles on Wikipedia, data items on Wikidata and books on Wikibooks, which will be held simultaneously at each of the communities for 2 days. This integrating approach will foster a collaborative and practical learning environment, encouraging participants to actively contribute to Wikipedia articles, Wikidata and WikiBooks articles related to the project's goals. The training will enable them translate and edit Wikipedia and Wikidata items, as well as upload lyrics of Africa Music on Wikibooks. This activity will involve a series of engaging workshops and sessions designed to educate and train participants, including both new and experienced Wikimedian editors, in the art of translating and creating Wikibooks articles about African music and musicians. Both new and existing editors will be equipped with the necessary tools and information to effectively contribute to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikibooks. This training will be done for Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Fulfulde, Tyap, and Igala language contributors in 6 locations simultaneously.
3. Translate-a-thon: The translate-a-thon session will provide hands-on experience, enabling participants to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge required to effectively contribute to Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikibooks. This translate-a-thon aims to bridge the language gap and it will involve translating related articles to Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Tyap, Fulfulde and Igala languages on Wikipedia. By bridging the language gap, this contest not only preserves the rich heritage of Africa but also elevates their representation, diversity and inclusivity in indigenous languages.
4. Virtual Training Session: 2 Virtual online training will be held, to provide further help and mentorship to participants, to empower and train editors with the skills needed to participate in the contest.
5. Contest: This contest will provide participants with the opportunity to put their new skills to use by translating articles related to African music and musicians, as well as creating Wikidata and WikiBooks items. This will improve the overall quality and accessibility of this content in Nigerian indigenous languages on Wikipedia, providing a valuable resource for the global knowledge community. By enhancing the knowledge of Africa’s rich heritage and traditions, this contest will help to preserve and share the unique cultural heritage of Africa.
6. Review: At the end of the contest, reviewers will review all contributions made to all the projects, to ascertain the top three participants across all projects. Gift cards will be given to the top three participants and top newest editor.

The team involved in this project includes prolific editors from our indigenous language community, who are also coordinators, from Yoruba, Hausa, Fulfulde, Igbo, Igala, and Tyap communities. They will ensure proper training and monitoring of the translate-a-thon in their various communities. these team members include:
1. Dokimazo99 (Project lead & Yoruba language facilitator) - is a seasoned Yoruba Wikipedia editor who stands as one of the most prolific content creators on the Yoruba Wikipedia having created over 500 articles on Yoruba Wikipedia. She serves as the Programs Officer and Wikipedian-in-Residence for the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group at the International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture. She was the 2023 Wikimedia User Group Nigeria's Best Indigenous Language Contributor of the Year. Additionally, her leadership skill as the 2022-2023 President for the Yoruba Wiki Fan-club Unilag and Wikipedian-in-Residence for the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, showcases her commitment to promoting and preserving the Yoruba language. She has a proven track record of spearheading successful projects, such as the "Wikipedia Training: University of Lagos First Semester," where she diligently trained and guided participants in the art of editing and translating articles on Yoruba Wikipedia. She has facilitated and co-facilitated several projects in the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group such as; Deoband Yoruba Collaborative Project, Training students at the University of Lagos, Recruit Readers as Writer, exploring Yoruba literary traditions, Yoruba Wikipedia training at the International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture, University of Ibadan,Yoruba Wikipedia Training at Fountain University amongst others. She has trained and recruited over 100 editors to the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, to contribute to Wikipedia in their local language.
Role - Project lead and Yoruba language facilitator. In this project, she is in charge of overseeing the overall activities of the project and also facilitates training and translate-a-thon sessions specifically tailored for Yoruba Wikipedia editors, with a focus on equipping editors with the knowledge and skills required to make effective contributions, including translation, and enhance the quality of content on the Yoruba language Wikipedia. Additionally, she will initiate community engagement activities and oversee the award presentation among the Yoruba Wiki Fan-club in Unilag.
2. Dr Marve is a member of the Yoruba Wikimedia User Group and an active contributor to Wikipedia. His scope of interest has always been to improve the quality of articles and most of his contributions have been centered around creating articles and improving the qualities of articles already on Yoruba Wikipedia. He has been serving as a member of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria grant committee since 2023, he also served as a community support for the Wikinaijanames: Celebrating Nigeria's Indigenous Identity on Wikimedia project.
Roles: Yoruba language co-facilitator. In this project, he will assist the Yoruba language facilitator, and oversee activities for the creation of content on the Yoruba Wikipedia.
3. Iwuala Lucy (Igbo Language facilitator) - is an experienced Wikimedian and passionate about indigenous language revitalization and free knowledge dissemination. She's the Coordinator for Igbo Wiki Fan Club, Alvan, Member of the Wiki Loves Women, Regional Grant Committee, Member of the ComCom Wikimedia Foundation, and Social Media Manager for Wiki Loves Monuments International Team.
Roles- Igbo Language facilitator. As a member of the Igbo Wikimedians User Group and Co-Founder of the Igbo Wiki Community in Imo, she will bring extensive experience to this project. In this project, she will conduct and spearhead training and translate-a-thon sessions specifically tailored for Igbo Wikipedia. Her focus will be on equipping editors with the knowledge and skills required to make effective contributions, especially translation, and enhancing the quality of content on the Igbo language Wikipedia. Additionally, she will initiate community engagement activities and oversee the award presentation in the Imo Wiki Community.
4. Akwugo (Igbo language co-facilitator) is a language expert and an open knowledge advocate passionate about promoting Igbo language and culture through Wikimedia projects.
Role - Igbo language co-facilitator. In this project, she will assist the Igbo language facilitator, and oversee activities for the creation of content on the Igbo Wikipedia.
5. Gwanki (Hausa language facilitator) is a seasoned Wikimedia contributor and Hausa Wikipedia administrator. Active in the Wikimedia community since 2013, he has made more than 50,000 edits across various Wikimedia projects. Gwanki has extensive experience facilitating Wikimedia projects, particularly in Northern Nigeria, with a focus on community building, capacity development, and promoting contributions to indigenous language Wikipedia. He has successfully organized and participated in numerous Wikimedia initiatives, including awareness campaigns, edit-a-thons, and training programs, and is an award-winning contributor, recognized as the Best Indigenous Language Contributor 2024 by the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. His expertise spans Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, and oral history documentation, making him a valuable asset for any Wikimedia project. Gwanki is known for his dedication to free knowledge, his ability to engage diverse communities, and his effective project facilitation skills.
Role - Hausa language facilitator. As a facilitator in this project, he will be training and facilitating members from the Hausa Wikipedia community. He will ensure that participants not only learn but are also empowered to sustain their contributions long after the project gets concluded.
6. Smshika (Hausa language co-facilitator) is an active member of the Hausa Wikimedia group. He contributes to Wikimedia projects like 'Hausa Wiki for Human Rights' and work to promote education and cultural heritage in his community. He organized wiki for Human Rights 2023 and 2024 in the Hausa community. He has also facilitated some mini Grants under Wikimedia Nigeria User Group, such as Wikipedia Awareness in BAUCHI, Wikipedia Awareness and training in Zaria, Wikimedia Awareness in Minna.
Role - Hausa language co-facilitator.
7. De-Invincible (Fulfulde Wikipedia facilitator) is an experienced Wikimedia projects editor and a certified trainer of the Train the Trainer program of Wikimedia UK. He is an administrator on Fulfulde Wikipedia and a veteran organizer who has successfully organized and facilitated several Wikimedia projects in Northern Nigeria from campaigns to series of edit-a-tons and contests. He is currently, the Executive Director of Fulfulde Wikimedians Community.
Role - Fulfulde language facilitator. His focus will be on equipping editors with the knowledge and skills required for effective contributions, including translation, and enhancing the quality of content on Fulfulde Wikipedia. Additionally, he will initiate community engagement activities and oversee the award presentation in the Fulfulde Wikipedia community as well.
8. Apdoull (Fulfulde language co-facilitator) is a passionate advocate for language preservation, with his major contributions focused on the Fulfulde language version of Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. He sees indigenous languages as the backbone of his identity and is committed to ensuring its visibility and accessibility on the global stage. With over 3000 translated articles on the Fulfulde Wikipedia, and series of project facilitations, Apdoull showcases his passion for the preservation of his indigenous language. Apdoull serves as the Logistics Manager for the Wikimedia Fulfulde Community and organizes Wiki-related events and awareness campaigns to promote Fulfulde Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. He was nominated for the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Best Indigenous Language Contributor 2024 Awards.
Role - Fulfulde language co-facilitator. He will serve as the co-facilitator for the Fulfulde Community, and foresee all contributions made to the Fulfulde Wikipedia.
9. Kambai Akau (Tyap language facilitator) is a prolific Wikimedia editor that mostly edits the English Wikipedia since 2016. In 2020, however, he began contributing to Tyap language content on Wikimedia. Tyap is a language spoken in the Nigerian Middle Belt. In early 2023, he intensified his editing on Wikivoyage during the Explore Africa contest, and evolved to be a part of the top editors. Today, he has over a lot of edits on Wikipedia (kcg, en), Wiktionary (kcg, en, ha, ig), Wikimedia Incubator, Wikidata, MetaWiki, Wikimedia Commons, MediaWiki, Wikibooks (en) and Wikivoyage (en). His entire edits in 2024 were mostly in the Tyap and English languages.
Roles - Tyap language facilitator. He will be responsible for facilitating training among the Tyap editors.
10. Friday musa is a young and passionate advocate of minoritized and endangered languages who hails from Southern Kaduna, Middle Belt of Nigeria. He is a Board of Trustees member of, the Tyap Wikimedians User Group. He, also, serves as the Project Manager, of Tyap Wikimedians Organization. He is an active Wikimedian specialized in both visual and source editing tools, with major contributions in the kcg (code for Tyap) and the English wiki projects. He has co-organized and co-facilitated many Wiki Outreach campaigns, which include but are not limited to; The Jju Wikipedia Outreach, where he co-facilitated and activated the Jju language Wikipedia (a local language in southern Kaduna), which is currently striving in the Incubator. He also facilitated the Atyapland WikiOutreach event where over 30 participants were, for the first time, trained on how to navigate Wikimedia projects, and lots of them are currently contributing to numerous WikiProjects and that leads to the establishment of [TWUG Atyapland Wiki Hub] * He's also part of the local coordinator/co-facilitator in Kaduna for the recently concluded WikiForHumanRights 2024 campaign in Nigeria.

11. AgnesAbah (Igala language facilitator) is a very enthusiastic activist for knowledge equity and the preservation of languages. She is co-founder and currently leads the Igala Wikimedia Community, whose advocacy is aimed at raising the Igala language on Wikipedia. She is a production team member at Africa Baraza, engaging in conversations about issues concerning the African continent. Furthermore, she is on the board of Women Do News to advocate for efforts to be made toward bridging the gender gap by increasing number of female journalists represented on Wikipedia.
Role - Igala language facilitator. She will be responsible for the training and monitoring of the Igala language translation-a-thon.
12. Ogalihillary (Igala language co-facilitator) is a Wikimedian from Nigeria who joined the Wikimedia movement in 2022 through the Igbo Wikimedians User Group. In 2023 he grew to become the admin mentee of the Igbo WikiCommons Hub where he took the role of the community lead for the year. Also in 2023, he joined the Wiki Loves Africa International as an Ambassador for the Anglophones. As a result of his passion for language preservation and open knowledge sharing, he joined a team of volunteer Wikimedians who helped bring Igala Wikipedia live from the incubator. Hilary is a writer, reader, and trainer of Igala language and also the project facilitator for Wiki Loves Africa.

- Stating why the proposal is important for the communities involved and why they think the strategies chosen will achieve the results that are expected.
- Highlighting any aspects they think are particularly well developed: for instance, the strategies and activities proposed, the levels of community engagement, outreach to underrepresented groups, addressing knowledge gaps, partnerships, the overall budget and learning and evaluation section of the proposal, etc.
