Lagos is Nigeria’s largest city and its leading economic and financial hub, one of the fastest-growing in Africa with an estimated population of 21 million (UN, 2024), expected to grow to 40 million by 2040. It serves as an important center for trade, housing the busiest ports in West Africa and facilitating significant domestic and international commerce, positioning her as a major player in the global market. Transport plays a significant role in the socio-economic and political development of Lagos. It is a catalyst that facilitates access to various locations, services and opportunities within and outside the state.
Lagos has extensive modes of transportation that include road, rail, air, and water. Despite these, the consistent inflow of people and unguided commercial activities in Lagos have occasioned several perceived challenges that affect the performance of the existing transportation infrastructure in meeting the daily mobility and accessibility needs of residents (Salisu et al., 2021). This congestion affects productivity, increases pollution, and limits economic efficiency.
Given Lagos's extensive coastline and lagoon system, water transportation presents a viable alternative to alleviate the city's traffic woes. Water transport is associated with inland waterways, coastal waters and the deep sea (Ismaila, 2008). It is unfortunate that Lagos, a coastal city with abundant navigable waterways has its waterways minimally exploited. If optimized, it could help in eliminating congestion, pollution, and provide a low-cost alternative to long haul passages. Despite these many rewards, In-water based transportation system encounters a number of challenges which if managed; it will effectively complement and reduce the pressure on road transport in Lagos State.
Expanding the water transport network would not only reduce the burden on roads but also offer faster and more efficient travel for commuters in key areas like Ikorodu, Lekki, and Victoria Island. Strengthening ferry services and improving waterway infrastructure could provide an environmentally friendly solution, connecting residential and business districts more effectively. Developing water transport alongside land-based systems is essential to addressing the city's congestion crisis and ensuring sustainable mobility for its growing population.
Water Transport is expected to play an increasing role in Lagos’ urban mobility. It can become a pivotal component in adapting the State’s multi-modal public transport system to the impacts of efficient and sustainable urban mobility.
Despite the importance of transportation to the growth and development of Lagos, there is an observable gap in knowledge, a substantial lack of content, and a lack of awareness on Lagos's transportation infrastructures particularly waterways transportation on Wikipedia.
Only few articles on wikipedia discuss water transport in Lagos, articles such as the following still need to be expanded as they are still a stub
A. Lagos State Ferry Services Corporation B.National Inland Waterways Authority C.Lagos State Waterways Authority
Waterways Assets Development Services does not have an article on Wikipedia despite their relevance in Nigerian water transportation system.
articles related to water transport such as this needs to be created and which will help bridge the transportation content gap that exists on Wikipedia. This event will create awareness, both new and old Wikipedia users, to create and improve content on the transportation.
For better geographical use, these water transport system in Lagos needs to be added on Wikidata as they are still missing items with only few represented. The following articles are still missing on wikidata 1. National Inland Waterways Authority
2. Waterways Assets Development Services
Also, Nigerian Shipper' Council (Q93202390) only has 6 statements with other items still missing.
This project aims to create awareness and bridge the knowledge gap of transportation (waterways transportation) contents in Lagos. This will lead to a higher rate of youth awareness and involvement in creating articles on modes transportation in Lagos, bridging the existing content gap on Wikipedia and Wikidata, and increase the number of well-informed youths actively engaged in solving transportation problems in Lagos State.
The project aims to train and recruit 50 new editors who are residents of Lagos. We hope to lay a strong foundation for the utilization of Wikimedia outcomes, particularly among the youth. Participants will be trained in contributing effectively to various Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia and Wikicommon.
This comprises creating Wikipedia accounts (understanding core content policies and general editing principles, and making minor edits) and Wikicommon uploads policies. Likewise, this proposed two month-long endeavour holds the guarantee of documenting quality images of important transportation facilities such as bus terminals, railway stations, airport, jetties etc. on wikicommons while addressing content gaps that presently exist in various Wikipedia articles about transportation.
If approved, this project will establish the inaugural Wiki Loves Transport Community , designed to keep participants engaged with ongoing and future Wikimedia-related activities in the community.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The project will run for two months (December 2024 - February 2025). The activities will be carried out through a comprehensive design:
1. Conducting a two-day in-person workshop: For two days, participants will obtain hands-on training on documenting Transportation in Lagos and Waterways transportation on Wikimedia projects. There will be a two-day physical training aimed to provide participants with a foundational understanding of Wikipedia, Wikidata, and the Commons Wiki. During the training, the participants would be exposed to both general and specific notability guidelines, sourcing for reliable references, writing from an objective point of view, etc. The first physical training being the 1st week of the campaign and the second physical training will be held on the 5th week of the campaign.
2. Three (3) sessions of online support training: To enhance participants' editing proficiency on Wikipedia and Wikicommons, the project will host three (3) online sessions. Experienced facilitators will guide these sessions, targeting areas where participants need improvement. The first online training session will come up 2nd week of the campaign while the second and third online sessions will be scheduled to be held in the 4th and 6th weeks of the campaign, respectively.
3. Edit-a-thon, Image Upload, and Tour to various transportation facilities in Lagos: After a month of extensive training, an edit-a-thon focusing on improving content on Transportation in Lagos will be held for a month. While this is ongoing, a day tour engaging the targeted participants to transportation facilities across Lagos will be facilitated. This will enhance documentation of transportation facilities in Lagos such as bus terminals, railway stations, airports, jetties, etc. on the Wikicommons.
4. Assessment, Award Presentation, Survey, and Feedback session: At the end of this project, an assessment session will take place. Outstanding contributors will be awarded with certificates of excellence. The Edit-a-thon winners would be awarded with gift vouchers. A WhatsApp group will be created where participants will be mentored after the project. This will serve as a forum for collaboration, and interaction, motivating participants to edit and seek guidance.
