Part 1: Project and impact

Building on Artexte's five-year involvement with Art+Feminism, this project focused on editing Wikipedia and Wikidata content connected to the research field of the ethics of care in contemporary art. Within that framework, we prioritized work by women, non-binary, racialized, Indigenous, and LGBTQ2S+ artists that remains underrepresented in existing art-historical documentation. As we developed our work list, we also found it essential to focus specifically on collective art projects, artist collectives, and artist-run spaces.The project had three goals:

  • Recruit new editors from underrepresented communities
  • Strengthen skills and confidence among existing editors through hands-on mentorship
  • Expand and improve content on artists and authors excluded from dominant art narratives

To carry this out, the project moved through three connected phases, beginning with documentation and network building, followed by the Edit-a-thon and Wiki-Clubs themselves, and concluding with the results and tools described below.

Documentation and network building. Artexte staff used our specialized collection to identify documentation on relevant artists, collectives, and artist-run spaces. This produced a work list of wikipedia articles and wikidata items; a working bibliography published online, with supporting physical material available in our reading room for over three months (we estimated about 20 consultants over the summer). We also connected with partner organizations and academic departments, including Université du Québec à Montréal and Wikimedia Canada, to build a wider network of contributors. These connections established foundations for future partnerships, notably with Maison MONA on structuring Wikidata across the visual arts, and with Pluriclub in engaging and supporting activities for underrepresented communities.

Edit-a-thon and Wiki-Clubs. The hybrid Edit-a-thon in May combined in-person and remote participation, with technical training led by Amber Berson (art historian, curator, and researcher) alongside Artexte's librarians, technicians, and collections assistant, who helped anchor new entries in verifiable sources. Two follow-up Wiki-Clubs extended the work: the July session covered Wikidata modeling and metadata, and the September session covered collaborative drafting and notability guidelines for grassroots collectives.

Results. Across these three phases, 38 registered editors took part (22 at the Edit-a-thon, 16 across the Wiki-Clubs, including 3 new editors), contributing over 567,000 bytes added, 501 references integrated, and 1,186 total edits (1,092 in mainspace). Participants created 70 new pages and edited 230 existing pages across French, English, and Spanish Wikipedia, plus 39 new Wikidata items and 143 items edited (899 edits). Tracked article views totaled over 54,500 during the project period.

What worked. First, the preestablished connections are key to have new and experienced editors to assist to the events. We also connected directly with community groups aligned with our work list, which broadened participation and highlighted the importance of contributing across multiple linguistic contexts, working not only in English and French, but also expanding into Spanish and Portuguese. Linking physical publications, artist files, and exhibition catalogues directly to Wikipedia's verifiability requirements proved to be the most effective asset Artexte could offer; having tangible documentation on-site eliminated the persistent barrier beginner editors face when establishing notability and significantly eased newcomer anxiety regarding technical editing steps.

Following the Edit-a-thon, we initiated an ongoing intake process by inviting participating artists and collectives to deposit new materials into Artexte's permanent collection. This established an active reciprocal loop between the physical collection and the open-access Wikimedia content it supports, deepening our institutional commitment to the project and embedding Wikimedia workflows directly into our daily organizational routines as a sustainable, long-term practice.

Finally, to anchor these outcomes, we produced a trilingual (French, English, and Spanish) print and digital guide, Indexation du care sur Wikidata, now available on Wikimedia Commons. The guide introduces the Wikimedia ecosystem alongside the project developed in dialogue with the Art+Feminism campaign. It offers step-by-step instructions for indexing care-related and relational art practices on Wikidata (notably using property P921, "main subject"), providing an accessible, concrete tool for autonomous work.

Part 2: Learning

You can recall these learning questions below: Through this project, we hope to learn a bit more about how we could build and sustain collaborative, anti-oppressive knowledge spaces within both Wikipedia and Wikidata. We also hope to learn how ongoing dialogue and follow-up activities, such as WikiClubs, can foster longer-term engagement, strengthen networks between artists, researchers, and activists, and generate collective strategies for knowledge production that are ethical, feminist, and participatory. We also hope to see the seed of change by reading and monitoring the articles that will be edited, translated and see if we need to add things to our collections in order to document better. We anticipate participation from both returning and new researchers. Through expanded outreach to collaborators, we aim to engage between 20 and 30 participants actively contributing to the creation, editing and translating of articles. The event is expected to generate approximately 40–70 meaningful edits, while fostering skill development, knowledge sharing, and longer-term research collaborations beyond the event itself.

Through these learning questions, we reflected :

  1. Sustaining an anti-oppressive space takes concrete and structural strategies for the events: A recurring tension exists between Wikipedia's standard notability criteria and how contemporary artistic practices are actually documented ephemeral, and relational work often doesn't fit those criteria well. Having physical archival material on hand during the event reduced the anxiety beginner editors felt about sourcing and verifiability. On Wikidata, indexing "care" in visual arts as an intersectional concept wasn't straightforward with generic metadata; developing our own indexation guide showed us that participants need clear, concrete pathways (e.g., using property P921) to translate these practices into structured data without oversimplifying them.
  2. The multi-session format WikiClub can convert one-time participants into ongoing contributors: The Wiki-Club format made a clear difference for retention and for building relationships between contributors and organizers. Splitting technical focuses (one session on Wikidata modeling, another on drafting articles about collectives) let returning participants build real confidence with both.
  3. Our wiki engagements indeed helped surface gaps in our own collection. While researching and developing our work lists through thematic guidelines, we had already identified important lacunae in our holdings. In addition, observing what participants chose to edit highlighted recurring limits in how contemporary art is documented. Particularly language disparities and the scarcity of documentation on collective initiatives. This reinforced that our Wikimedia activities double as a diagnostic tool for identifying collection gaps, enabling our organization to actively seek out and acquire publication or solicit documents on these artists.

Going forward, we plan to formalize a feedback loop between the two: actively inviting documented Canadian artists, collectives, and independent spaces to deposit material with Artexte, and working with other organizers to refine Wikidata templates for artist-run centres, collective authorship, and performance art, sharing those templates within the Art+Feminism and Wikimedia Canada GLAM networks.

We also intend to keep the multi-session format rather than a single annual event, folding Wiki-Clubs into our regular public programming to support long-term retention. Next steps include also designing beginner workshops tailored to specific community needs, with dedicated reference support and resources suited to the documentation priorities of underrepresented cultural workers.


5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

We were surprised by the diversity of backgrounds among participants at the events. Our Wiki activities expanded beyond our regular public, and it was inspiring to see how well these groups worked together.

We also saw the strong impact of holding small-group meetings on fostering and strengthening community networks. We received a high level of engagement, as well as a strong demand to continue and expand these sessions. From this experience, we learned that building and refining these relationships requires a significant, ongoing investment of time.


6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We are sharing the project's outcomes primarily through our pedagogical guide, Indexation du care sur Wikidata. Published under an open license in French, English, and Spanish on Wikimedia Commons, it is freely accessible for artist-run centres, GLAM institutions, and editing collectives to adopt entirely or adapt relevant sections to their own contexts.

We also presented the project’s methodology and results to the broader movement at WikiConference North America 2026 through our presentation, "Communs du care : huit ans d'édition féministe à Artexte." This offered a valuable platform to showcase our work and build dialogue with local Montreal and Quebec organizers, wikimedians colleagues, peers across North America, and French-speaking Wikimedians from Africa attending the conference.

Building a network works at the pace of building friendships. We aim to build on this through small, recurring events while collaborating on other Wiki initiatives. On our end, we will continue expanding our Wiki activities and plan to apply for another grant to sustain this work meaningfully.
