Main Proposal

[edit]
1. [TITLE] Title of your proposal.

Athens Wikipedia Workshop & Armenian Heritage Editathon

2 - 3. [FROM - TO] Proposed start and end dates for the grant proposal. (required)

2026-06-10 - 2026-06-15

4. [AREA OF IMPLEMENTATION] Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)

Greece

5. [TARGET GROUP] Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The target participants are a small, focused group of school student contributors from Athens and the wider Armenian diaspora: 15 participants based in Athens, including 13 students and 2 accompanying teachers, plus 1 participant from Yerevan and 1 from Beirut. The project will also involve the local school partner in Athens, with a preparatory visit planned for 28 or 29 April to introduce the project and begin pre-work for both Western Armenian and Greek article creation. During the activities, participants will take part in guided site visits, workshop sessions, and collaborative editing. After the activities, they will continue improving articles and uploading photos online. The main Wikimedia projects involved will be Western Armenian and Greek Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

6. [TOPIC/ AREA OF EXPERTISE] What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change, as well as the main approaches to achieve it. (required)

This proposal aims to improve Wikimedia coverage of Armenian heritage in Athens and nearby historic sites, while building editing skills among young participants and local contributors. The main challenge is that many of these heritage places and migration-related histories are underrepresented or insufficiently documented on Wikimedia projects. The project responds to that gap by combining site-based learning, article writing, and photo documentation so participants can create and improve content in a way that is both educational and publicly useful. The approach is intentionally hands-on: a school-based workshop, guided visits to relevant sites, and follow-up editing afterwards.

7. [HOW / ACTIVITIES] What are the planned activities? (required)

Main activities include: a preparatory visit to Nikos school on 28 or 29 April; a 6-day workshop program from 10–15 June; school-based editing sessions; guided visits to heritage and historical sites including the Eetionean Walls, the Libasmatha complex, Nikaia, the Old Parliament, Anafiotika, the Old Market, Plaka, and Aegina; article writing during and after the visits; and uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons. The workshop is designed to turn site visits into Wikimedia content, with continued editing after the field activities are completed.

10. [TOOLS] What tools will you use to measure each target (metrics) mentioned? (required)

We will use a participant registration list, sign-in sheets, XTools, Wikipedia revision histories, Wikimedia Commons upload logs, and manual review of edits and media contributions to measure participation and content outcomes.

11. [TEAM] Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required)

Local coordinator in Athens — Haigan Minasian (User:HoMen), responsible for school coordination, logistics, and on-site support. Wikimedia content lead from Yerevan — Azniv Istepanian (User:Azniv Stepanian), responsible for article planning, editing support, and follow-up. Participating contributor from Beirut — Sevan Tanielian-Megerian (User:Սեւան Դանիէլեան Մկրեան) supports editing, review, and cross-community collaboration. Accompanying teachers who support the students during the school-based workshop and site visits.

12. [LEARNING LESSON] What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

The main learning questions are: whether a site-based workshop helps participants produce better Wikimedia content; whether a preparatory school visit improves the quality and readiness of participants; whether combining heritage visits with editing increases motivation and follow-through; and whether a small, multilingual, cross-community team can create durable content that continues to grow after the workshop.

13. [BUDGET] Upload your budget for this proposal or indicate the link to it. (required)
14 - 14.1. [AMOUNT] What is the amount you are requesting for this proposal? Please provide the amount in your local currency. (required)

1826000 AMD

14.2. Convert the amount requested into USD using the Oanda converter. This is done to help you assess the USD equivalent of the requested amount. Your request should be between 700 and 5,000 USD. (required)

5000 USD

15. [BUDGET EXPLANATION] Please explain the units used in your budget in a few sentences, so we can better understand your proposed budget per unit and per amount. (required)

The budget is structured across key cost categories required to implement the workshop and ensure participation from multiple communities. Travel ($900) covers roundtrip flights for two participants (from Yerevan and Beirut), using direct routes for efficiency. Accommodation ($1,300) supports their stay in a budget hotel. Per diem ($610) is calculated at $305 per person for 5 days, based on the official Armenian government per diem index. Transportation ($100) includes local travel costs such as taxis and public transport. The island visit ($750) covers boat transportation for the Aegina trip, which is part of the educational program. Accounting ($100) is required for organizational financial compliance. Catering ($1,000) includes water, snacks, and a small buffet for the public-facing component. Visa costs ($40) are allocated for one participant. A contingency line ($200) is included for unexpected expenses, with any unused funds to be returned.

16. [REGIONAL COLLABORATION] Did you notify the existing affiliate in your region? Are you going to collaborate with them? (required)

No, the existing affiliate has not yet been notified. We will reach out to them and invite them to participate or advise, especially for capacity exchange, local coordination, and any collaboration they may wish to join.

17. [SUSTAINABILITY] Did you think about the sustainability of this project? If yes, can you explain why you believe in that and which activities can continue regardless of the funding? (required)

Yes. The project is sustainable because the main outputs are Wikimedia articles and media files that remain reusable after the grant ends. The school partnership and the cross-community editing model can continue in future years, and participants can keep improving the content independently. The workshop format is also lightweight enough to be repeated with future groups, even without the same funding level.

18. [REPLICABILITY] Did you think that this project could be replicated in other communities? If yes, please explain further why your project will be good for other communities? (required)

Yes. This project can be replicated by other communities because the model is simple and adaptable: identify a local school or community partner, connect a heritage theme to on-site visits, run a short editing workshop, and upload supporting media to Commons. Other diaspora or heritage-focused groups could use the same structure for their own cities, communities, and languages.

19. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

Yes

19.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws.
