Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The implemented activities for this event include:

  • Orientation on Wikimedia projects and awareness creation: Participants were exposed for the first time to Wikimedia projects and what the Wikimedia Foundation aims to achieve.
  • Account creation for new users: About 28 new accounts were created for participants.
  • Content translations to Berom in the Wikimedia Incubator and Translatewiki: A translation process was begun in the Wikimedia Incubator and on the Translatewiki sites, with about 18 active editors within the period of the programme.
  • Follow-up using our social media handle(s): We had WhatsApp and Telegram groups created, in which we follow up on the activities of editors, and encourage them to carry on the work.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

From my experience organizing and implementing this project, I have come to obtain the following insights regarding my three learning questions stated above and below:

  • What are the best practices in mobilizing new editors?
    • First of all, getting the official Language Board informed, and letting them play a part in mobilizing literate participants, i.e., those literate in the target language.
    • Secondly, getting the student union involved in getting the same as above.
      • Thirdly, social media campaigns play a good role in organising events such as this.
  • What can I do to enhance their learning experiences?
    • Creating WhatsApp and Telegram groups helps in staying close to editors, and in advocating for their continual participation long after the training is rounded up.
  • What are the ways of sourcing materials to support editors in translation?
    • Having the official Language Board involved helps in making such materials available for use, and having social media handles encourages others to share materials with fellow editors that can move the work forward.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Both positive and negative situations occurred.

Firstly, the positive aspect: There was an overwhelming support from the Berom Educational and Cultural Organization (BECO), with a benevolent offer of their secretariat for the event, and provision of a spare projector when ours failed, and a standby generator for electricity. They also helped in mobilizing the participants, alongside the Berom Translation Board. They also offered internet data support, and the crop of people who came was encouraging.

Secondly, regarding the negative aspect, we never anticipated that internet connectivity would be that bad in that region until we tried to edit and livestream our event on YouTube. The situation was quite frustrating, and we had to manage our way till we were done. Additionally, some individuals never showed up after indicating their availability. Some of the participants expressed readiness for the work, but never really participated. We hoped to get a lot of literacy materials, which the Language Board assured us were available, but we only ended up getting only one, the Berom language Bible.

I shall share with the community on WhatsApp and Telegram my project learnings and results.
