The Bodo community is one of the largest indigenous tribes of Assam, and the Bodo language is among the most widely spoken languages in the state. It is also recognized as the second official language of Assam. In recent years, the Bodo language community has begun contributing to Wikimedia platforms, making this a crucial moment to support and strengthen the growth and visibility of the Bodo Wikimedia community. This initiative aims to create a comprehensive digital repository representing the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Assam, with a special focus on Bodo culture. The project seeks to document and showcase both well-known and lesser-known aspects of Bodo traditions on global open-knowledge platforms such as Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and Wikipedia. Through this effort, we aspire to preserve cultural knowledge for future generations, raise global awareness of Assam’s unique traditions, and encourage active community participation in Wikimedia projects. In an increasingly globalized world, many traditional cultural practices risk being forgotten or overshadowed. This challenge is particularly relevant for indigenous communities, where valuable cultural knowledge often remains undocumented or scattered. By addressing these gaps, the initiative will help preserve, celebrate, and make accessible the cultural heritage of Assam to a global audience, while fostering pride, ownership, and engagement within local communities. As an initial step, the project will focus on documenting the folk traditions of the Bodo community, including cuisine, folk songs, dance forms, traditional attire, and other related cultural expressions. Through this, it is aimed that by being associated with Wikimedia projects, they will be able to advance their Bodo-language Wikimedia projects using the skills they have learned.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

A dedicated event page will be established, encompassing all pertinent information. In addition to Wikipedia and Wikimedia mailing lists and on-wiki notifications, the contest will be actively promoted across various social media channels.

There will be a mentorship program in collaboration with the Bodo language departments of various colleges across the BTAD area, such as Tamulpur College (Baksa), Rangapara College (Sonitpur), Bodoland University (Kokrajhar), Cotton University (Guwahati). Additionally, an awareness program will be conducted in collaboration with the Bodo Students’ Union. We will also invite interested participants from across Assam by announcing the initiative through local newspapers and other regional media platforms to ensure widespread awareness and participation.

Workshops: Both online and offline training workshops will be organized at the start of the project, following all promotional activities. These workshops will equip participants with the skills to write or translate articles from English and Assamese into the Bodo language, as well as to effectively document cultural elements. Participants will also learn how to upload media to Wikimedia Commons and create or enhance Wikipedia articles.

Fieldwork: Participants will be divided into groups to explore and document cultural treasures, including attire, crafts, festivals, music, dance, cuisine, and rituals.

Data Contribution: Participants will upload all collected photographs, videos, and detailed descriptions to Wikimedia Commons. They will then use this data to enhance existing Wikipedia articles or create new articles focusing on Bodo culture.

Showcase and Collaboration: The project will conclude with a one-day meetup to present outcomes, celebrate contributions, and discuss future cultural preservation initiatives. This will encourage collaboration within the community to ensure sustainability and continuous growth of the project. The collaboration will focus on the Bodo departments of colleges in the BTAD area and the Bodo Students’ Union.

Edit-a-thon: An edit-a-thon will be organized among the participants, and winners will be encouraged with gift vouchers.
