Access to knowledge is a fundamental human right. However, in Nigeria, people with disabilities remain underrepresented in Wikimedia projects, both as contributors and as subjects of freely accessible information. Critical topics such as representative organizations, assistive technologies, disability rights, and support programs from both government and non-governmental sectors are significantly under-documented on Wikipedia. This initiative aims to bridge this gap by recruiting and training new Wikimedians, with a particular focus on individuals with disabilities, to contribute knowledge relevant to their communities. Through targeted edit-a-thons and capacity-building sessions, both new and experienced editors will collaborate to expand coverage of disability-related topics. Additionally, they will have ongoing access to these resources using Kiwix, ensuring offline availability for reference and learning. By making disability-related information more accessible, this initiative supports the WikiForHumanRights campaign, which champions access to knowledge, digital inclusion, and the right to a healthy environment. It also aligns with UN SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) and UN SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by fostering a more inclusive digital space where everyone can contribute to and benefit from free, neutral information. Furthermore, the use of Kiwix will enhance access to Wikimedia resources at any time, even without an internet connection, reinforcing the global right to information.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. By addressing these knowledge gaps on Wikimedia platforms, we aim to make critical information more accessible to a wider audience.
