Building French Wikimedia Community in Nigeria

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Nigeria as an Anglophone country in West Africa, has French speakers and readers from its neighboring countries. It is established that, Nigerians use French language to communicate with their Francophone neighbors, French as a second official language, as a career, subject for students, for the job market and for sustaining the Franco- Nigerian relationship. Nigeria has more than 6000 (six thousand) students studying French language as major across the public and private institutions in the country including the Nigerian French Village in Lagos. These Students, French Teachers and Lecturers need to read articles in French to carry out their research works, few Nigerian articles are written French language. Not much project expressing Nigerian realities in French language. This project therefore have twin objectives of training French Speakers and Writers in Nigeria to contribute Nigerian content to the French Language Wikipedia, as well as to help create articles about Nigerian institutions and culture in French Language. This will ultimately set the foundation for the establishment of a French Wikimedia Community in Nigeria.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

The main approach is to build capacity by training French speakers and writers in Nigeria to contribute contents to the French Wikipedia. I believe this approach will be effective because the native French speakers in Nigeria the lack the necessary wiki skills to contribute contents in the French language Wikipedia.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The following activities will be carried out to insure the successful execution of the project:

1. Sensitization and awareness campaign about Wikipedia and its sisters projects

3. Creation of Outreach Dashboard to monitor participants’ contributions, as well as to measure the project metrics.
4. Creation of whatsapp group for mentoring of the participants before, during and after the event.
