Igala Wikimedia Community has been contributing content to the Igala Wikipedia, which resulted in the language Wikipedia being accepted from the Wikimedia Incubator. Since the approval of Igala Wikipedia from the Wikimedia Incubator to a full-fledged site at igl.wikipedia.org, we have successfully created over 600 Igala articles through our Limited Local Content: Existing online content in Igala is sparse, and local topics remain underrepresented. This gap limits Igala-speaking users from accessing information in their language.
Approach to Achieve This Change: Awareness and Engagement: We will conduct awareness sessions at Kogi State University Ayangba, Federal Polytechnic Idah, and Kogi State Polytechnic Lokoja to introduce Wikipedia, highlight its significance, and inspire pride in documenting Igala knowledge. Skills Training Workshops: Hands-on workshops will teach students and educators how to create, edit, and translate articles on Igala Wikipedia, equipping them with the necessary skills to contribute effectively. Follow-Up and Mentorship: To ensure sustainability, we will provide ongoing mentorship and support to new editors to help them overcome challenges and encourage continuous participation. Institutional Partnerships: We will build relationships with these educational institutions to help us create a long-term structure for participation and to create a community of regular contributors.monthly editathons. However, there is still a significant content and contributor gap that we aim to bridge. Our proposed outreach program at Kogi State University Ayangba, Federal Polytechnic Idah, and Kogi State Polytechnic Lokoja will help address these gaps.
The change we are trying to bring is to increase Igala content and also active contributors to Igala Wikipedia from students and educators at Kogi State University Ayangba, Federal Polytechnic Idah, and Kogi State Polytechnic Lokoja, creating a sustainable base of content creators who will support the growth and preservation of Igala language online.
We hope to build their digital literacy skills, and encourage students into a lasting engagement while they also help us recruit other volunteers in their institutions.
Main Challenges:
Limited Awareness: Many of our target audience, especially Igala speakers, are unfamiliar with Igala Wikipedia or how contributing to it helps preserve the language and culture.
