6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

change:

Our objective is to greatly enhance the visibility and representation of Hausa women and women from Northern Nigeria in Wikimedia projects, particularly on Wikipedia Hausa, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. By organizing a variety of activities focused on International Women's Day, I aim to inspire and enable a new generation of Hausa Wikipedia editors to develop and refine content related to Hausa women and the history, culture, and society of Northern Nigeria.

challenge:

  • Inadequate Hausa language content on Wikimedia: There is currently a notable lack of high-quality Hausa language content across Wikimedia projects, especially the articles about Hausa women.
  • Digital and access to technology: Many Hausa women, especially in rural areas, face important barriers to accessing technology and the internet. This limits their ability to participate in Wikimedia projects.
  • Disparity in Wikimedia editing: Women are underrepresented among Wikimedia editors globally, and this is particularly evident among Hausa-speaking communities.

Approaching: I am using the following strategies to address these challenges.

  • Conduct two days of workshops and two days of online training and mentoring: These events will provide training on editing Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons, and focusing on Hausa women and their history, culture, and social life in Northern Nigeria.
  • Investigate prominent Hausa women in the diaspora: I will identify and research prominent Hausa women living outside Nigeria and create articles about them on Wikipedia and Wikidata.
  • Develop multimedia content for Wikimedia Commons: I will encourage participants to produce high-quality images, videos, and audio files related to Hausa women and Northern Nigeria, and then upload them to Wikimedia Commons.
  • Offer technical support and guidance: I will provide ongoing support and technical advice to participants to ensure their continued engagement in the Wikimedia project.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The program will commence with a one-day online training session that will introduce participants to Wikimedia projects and explain the importance and specific goals of this program. This will be followed by hands-on training in maintenance techniques, research techniques, and editing for Hausa Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. To offer limited-time opportunities, we will organize a two-day physical workshop. The main focus of the conference will be to train participants on how to research and document Hausa women as they stand out abroad. To further encourage active participation, we will launch a month-long writing contest. Participants will be invited to create new articles, improve existing ones, and submit relevant news stories to Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on issues related to women. The final online session will take place after the entire program to announce the contest winners and encourage participants to continue enhancing Wikimedia projects.
