Rapid Fund Final Report

Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

We were able to carry out all the main activities we planned for the project. We organized training and editing events to mark International Women's Day. During the events, participants learned how to create and improve Wikipedia articles about women. We also taught them how to upload pictures to Wikimedia Commons. Many people joined the events, and most of them were new editors. The results showed that the activities helped to increase content about women. What really worked well was the in-person training and support we gave during and after the events. It helped new editors understand better and continue editing even after the events ended.

2. Documentation of your impact. Please use space below to share links that help tell your story, impact, and evaluation. (required)

Share links to:

  • Project page on Meta-Wiki or any other Wikimedia project
  • Dashboards and tools that you used to track contributions
  • Some photos or videos from your event. Remember to share access.

You can also share links to:

  • Important social media posts
  • Surveys and their results
  • Infographics and sound files
  • Examples of content edited on Wikimedia projects

Additionally, share the materials and resources that you used in the implementation of your project. (required)

For example:

  • Training materials and guides
  • Presentations and slides
  • Work processes and plans
  • Any other materials your team has created or adapted and can be shared with others

We primarily used a single presentation slide as a visual aid. An essential tool was a projector, which allowed me to demonstrate live processes and show videos from Wikimedia Commons on how to upload images. This combination of live demonstration and pre-existing video tutorials effectively supported the project's goals.

3. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with this Rapid Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals. Required. Select one option per question. (required)

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: Through this project, We aspire to acquire important insights into the obstacles and opportunities experienced by women in the Hausa Wikipedia community. We seek to learn effective strategies for engaging and enabling women editors, and developing innovative approaches to create high-quality content on women's issues. What's more, We hope to enhance my understanding of the cultural and social context of Hausa women, and to contribute to the larger goal of increasing diversity and inclusivity on Wikimedia platforms.

Through this project, we learned that many women in the Hausa Wikipedia community are willing to learn and contribute, but they often face challenges such as low digital skills, limited internet access, and lack of confidence. We also saw that when women are given good support, clear guidance, and encouragement, they can do very well. We now understand better how culture and society affect women’s participation. In the future, we will use this knowledge to design better training, give more follow-up support, and help build a friendly space for women editors.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Something unexpected happened during our physical training event. Even though we had already paid for the venue, when we arrived on the day of the event, we found that the local government chairman was using the same hall. This forced us to quickly look for another venue. It took a lot of time to speak with the new management and get approval to use their space. Because of the delay, some participants—especially married women—had to leave or could not wait. Although we were able to hold the event successfully, we learned how important it is to confirm the venue again shortly before the event day to avoid last-minute changes and ensure participants are not discouraged.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We plan to share the results and learnings from this project with other community members through different methods. First, we are preparing a blog post to be published on the Wikimedia Diff platform, where we will highlight our activities, achievements, challenges, and what we learned. This will help others learn from our experience. We also plan to share the report and outcomes through our community social media groups. If there are any related events or conferences, we are ready to present our work there as well.
