‎Been our first time the Nupe Wikimedians Community to organizes the Wiki Loves Africa campaign, focusing on one of Nigeria’s most underrepresented regions North Central Nigeria in terms of contents and volunteer representation on Wikimedia projects. ‎ ‎The 2026 theme, Rites and Rituals, provides a unique opportunity for the Nupe Wikimedians Community to document and share the region’s rich cultural heritage through photographs, videos, and audio recordings. Our goal is to highlight our traditional practices, life-cycle events, and our festives act that are rarely represented online while empowering local creatives to preserve our heritage digitally. We plan to capture a wide range of Nupe rites and rituals, including ceremonies such as weddings, naming ceremonies, and the "Yawo Zhunyeli Ritual" a symbolic post-wedding tradition as well as spiritual and religious events like the "Boring Festival" honoring ancestors, "Dibo Saba" and "Sako rituals" and harvest festivals such as "Kiri Gani" , "Gani Gani" , and "Yam Festival". Despite their significance, these cultural elements are scarcely documented online. ‎ ‎The main challenges we aim to address include: ‎ ‎1. Underrepresentation of North-Central Nigerian cultures on Wikimedia projects. ‎ ‎2. Limited awareness and participation in open knowledge activities. ‎ ‎The change we want to bring is to make North Central Nigerian heritage visible, valued, and preserved through open knowledge sources which can be used by educators across the globe especially were such things are not available. ‎ ‎Our approaches include: ‎ ‎A. We will be Organizing a training workshops and photowalks on how to contribute to Wikimedia Commons, how to uploads wiki Commons. ‎ ‎B. Conducts a coverage of our festive events during. ‎ ‎C. Engaging returning and new participants to build a sustainable local Wikimedia community. ‎ ‎This project will bridge the visual content gap, strengthen in long run help our community, to foster pride in our shared cultural identity which in return help us to preserved our community. ‎

‎A. Workshop: we will introduce our community members to the Wiki Loves Africa contest and train them on how to contribute and participate and also invite professional photographers in the region and introduce them to Wikimedia projects and give them room to participate in the contest. ‎ ‎B. Photo hunts: we will embark on a photo walks taking and gathering random pictures different unrepeated during the festivals as highlighted in question (6) above, quality images related to the 2026 theme of WLA: Rites and Rituals. ‎ ‎C. Training sessions: another training will be held before the participants start uploading the media files to ensure accuracy and meeting of the requirements and to avoid having many problems with the uploaded files. ‎ ‎D. Upload sessions: most experience editors from the community will lead and guide the rest of the participants especially the newly recruited ones during the upload sessions. ‎ ‎E. Tracking Tools: we will use outreach dashboard and hashtag tools to track participants contributions and also provide one on one support for them. ‎ ‎F. Prizes: we will consider giving out prizes at the local level to the top 5 contributors as incentives to motivate them at the end of the contest. ‎

1. (Username : Nupemiyo) will be the project coordinator and will lead all the activities related to the project. He will is the co-founder of the Nupe Wikimedians Community and have been contributing to the Nupe community in ensuring the language is preserved. ‎ ‎2. (Username: Umar Ahmad2345) he will co-organizer and will help to mobilize young people around the project and in organizing the planned activities. ‎ ‎3. (Username:Jameel35) will serve the roles of communications/outreach and welfare activities in this project. ‎ ‎4. (Username:Fadindy and Haweey7575) They will serve the roles of logistics and dashboard management during the projects. ‎ ‎5. Two other experienced photographers will also be invited as facilitators to give their helping hands in this project especially during the selection of best images to be awarded the prizes.

The contest is open to all Wikimedia Nupe Community members and everyone outside the community regardless of their status and background who wants to contribute to the preservation of Nupe Language through ensuring Rites and Rituals are captured. All photography lovers who have images to share related to the theme from north central region of Nigeria are welcome to join the contest.

Through this project, we hope to learn how to effectively engage and sustain participation within an emerging Nupe Wikimedia community in North Central Nigeria. By organizing the Wiki Loves Africa campaign for the first time, we aim to understand what strategies work best for recruiting, training, and motivating new contributors especially youth, women, and creative professionals to document their culture through open knowledge platforms via pictures, videos documentation.
