- 6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)
Based on a preliminary landscape assessment, there is a significant knowledge gap on Wikimedia Commons regarding clear, educational visual assets for aquatic locomotion. Existing media mostly consists of static photos or highly stylized, fantasy-based animations that lead to misconceptions about aquatic physics. Static photos cannot adequately demonstrate body-wave propagation, caudal fin hydrodynamics, or buoyancy adjustments across morphologically diverse fancy goldfish variants.
To solve this gap, this project will create 5 accurate 2D vector animation loops (5–15 seconds each) illustrating the signature swimming traits of 5 major goldfish variants: Comet, Ranchu, Black Moor, Pearlscale, and Oranda. A 2D Flat style (Simplified Mechanics) is intentionally chosen to minimize visual noise, allowing learners, researchers, and Wikipedia readers to focus entirely on core locomotion physics.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
Month 1: Research & Pre-Production (Weeks 1–4) Conduct frame-by-frame analysis of natural fish mechanics using strictly CC0/Public Domain reference footage to document S-curve body bends and fin usage without direct tracing.
Develop rough 2D keyframe animation drafts to test fluid looping motion and establish core silhouettes for all 5 variants.
Month 2: Production, Formatting & Wikimedia Integration (Weeks 5–8) Finalize line clean-up and apply variant-specific anatomical details (e.g., Oranda's wen, Pearlscale's egg-shaped body, Comet's long caudal fins).
Render seamless loops into web-optimized open standards (.WebM and .MP4).
Upload assets to Wikimedia Commons under CC BY-SA with structured category tags, and actively embed the loops directly into relevant Wikipedia articles (e.g., Goldfish, Ranchu, Oranda) across language editions.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
I am applying as an individual creator and animator for this proposal (Wikimedia Username: Tavisa Hi). As a professional animator and digital media creator with established, highly efficient animation workflows, I will serve as the principal investigator and sole animator. I will be fully responsible for all desk research, 2D vector keyframing, motion cleanup, web-optimized rendering, asset uploading, and Wikipedia article integration. My daily hands-on experience in content production guarantees full capacity to complete this project within the 2-month timeline without external hiring.
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
As a media-focused content creation project, the primary targets are online learners, educators, students, and readers interested in aquatic biology and locomotion physics globally. I will engage with the community by informing relevant WikiProjects (such as WikiProject Aquarium Fishes and WikiProject Biology) on Wikipedia talk pages prior to and during production. After uploading the educational loops to Wikimedia Commons, I will solicit feedback from community editors to refine file descriptions, categories, and article placements.
- 10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)
No
- 10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Read more here.
N/A
- 11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.
The project proposal and scope have been outlined on my Wikimedia Commons user page (User:Tavisa Hi). I have initiated outreach by introducing the project on the relevant WikiProject talk pages to gather community insights on specific educational visual gaps. I will continue to post updates and invite community feedback on Meta-Wiki and Commons talk pages throughout the project's lifecycle to ensure full alignment with community standards.
