Part 1: Project and impact

The project was implemented through Community mobilization, collaborative capacity building workshop, edit-a-thon and Community engagement, partnership, Mentorship and follow-up. to encourage continuous contribution of feminist data.
We involved participants who were not Wikimedians, training sessions were organized, introducing participants to Wikimedia editing, sourcing, and content policies centering on documenting notable women, feminist perspectives, and gender-related topics. We had in- person community sessions in 2 communities, We had Mentorship and follow-up in our community communication channels.
These activities resulted in increased participation from both new and existing contributors, and improved coverage of feminist topics. Newbies received practical guidance on creating and improving articles, contributing to Wikidata, and translating content where appropriate. Edit-a-thons provided opportunities for participants to apply their skills in bridging content and gender gaps. The community engagement encouraged participants to work together on tasks creating a supportive learning environment and increased contribution levels. facilitator guidance after the training helped participants overcome challenges and remain active contributors.
Several approaches effectively helped us achieve our aim, the most effective approaches that supported us in achieving our core objectives were a. Capacity-building Workshop - This approach helped participants receive practical guidance on creating and improving articles. Hands-on training sessions helped participants to learn by doing, making it easier to understand Wikimedia editing practices. Also,the involvement of experienced facilitaors helped in achieving the aim of the project through helping participants overcome technical and editorial challenges.
b. Hands-on practical sessions: Participants learned faster when training was combined with live editing exercises.
c. Mentorship and follow-up support: Providing guidance after the training helped participants overcome challenges and remain active contributors.

Part 2: Learning

What forms of mentorship sustain participation of new editors beyond training?
We learnt that the strategies that most effectively keep feminist communities in Wikimedia engaged are : a. Combining awareness building sessions with hands-on editing activities: This created a welcoming environment for participation. Participants were given opportunity for discussion and were cleared on certain tech/editorial challenges causing limitations.
b. Awareness creation on amplifying feminist voices and the need for gender equity resonated with participants especially those who were not Wikimedians.
Applying feminist data ethics We learnt that participants understood how Women are underrepresented, identified gaps especially in Africa, and reduced the gaps by contributing to contents about women thereby making the digital space a faiur space for all.
We learnt that mentorship was essential for maintaining engagement. Follow-ups, accessible communication channels, and timely feedback helped participants overcome technical and editorial challenges, increased their confidence, and encouraged many of them to continue contributing after the formal training sessions had ended.
In future engagements, I will partner with gender-based organizations and combine the skills of experience facilitators during mentorship as these provide longer-term support structures that encourage new contributors to become active and sustained members of the Wikimedia movement.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Yes, one challenge we encountered was that some new editors initially found Wikimedia's technical processes more complex than expected. These slowed the pace of contributions during the early stages of the project but we were able to overcome through mentorship strategies in our community communication channels, one-on-one. This helped participants build confidence and improve their contributions. This increased our strenghth on volunteer retention strategy and continuous mentorship and in the future we will encourage practical editing sessions, discussion sessions as these will build confidence.

We have share our outcomes on our community channels to inspire similar initiatives and we created a meta-page for the project were we documented our outcome.
We are currently drafting a Diff Blog to share the learnings and outcomes.
