Below is the change we want bring in this Project:

This project seeks to enhance the accessibility and understanding of health information among Hausa speakers by decoding and explaining commonly used health acronyms on Hausa Wikipedia and Hausa Wiktionary. By doing so, we aim to bridge the knowledge gap, improve digital health literacy, and ensure that more people can engage with medical information in their native language.

Below is the challenge or problem we want solve in the project":

Health-related acronyms are widely used in medical and public health communication, but their meanings are often unclear to many Hausa speakers due to a lack of accessible explanations on Hausa Wikipedia and Hausa Wiktionary projects. This gap in knowledge makes it difficult for the researchers or visitors of Hausa Wikipedia and Hausa Wiktionary projects to fully understand health information, which can lead to confusion, misinformation, and reduced engagement with healthcare resources. Additionally, many potential contributors are unaware of how to add and improve health-related content on these projects.

Below is the approaches we want achieve:

We will begin by researching and identifying commonly used health acronyms relevant to Hausa speakers, ensuring they have clear and well-sourced definitions. These explanations will be added to Hausa Wikipedia by creating new articles and improving existing health articles . Similarly, Hausa Wiktionary will be expanded with dedicated entries for each acronym, providing proper linguistic and contextual details. To support this effort, we will organize training sessions to equip participants with the necessary skills to contribute effectively to Wikimedia projects. Finally, to ensure long-term sustainability, we will mentor new editors and build a committed network focused on enhancing health-related content in Hausa.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

To achieve the project’s goals, we have outlined the following key activities:

  • Community Engagement and Awareness: We will raise the awareness about the the importance of health related information in Hausa Community physical and online in order to attract the attention of participants to the project.
  • Training Workshops: We will organize hands-on workshops to train participants on Wikimedia editing. The medical doctor will be invited to provide insights into health terminologies in order to help participants create accurate content.
  • Research and Compilation of Health Acronyms: We will collaborate with medical doctor from Gwarzo General Hospital in order to identify commonly used health-related abbreviations relevant to Hausa-speaking communities and verify their accuracy with reliable sources to ensure the correctness and clarity of these definitions.
  • Edit-a-thon: We will create new and improve existing health-related articles on Hausa Wikipedia by adding acronym explanations and create new entries on Hausa Wiktionary.
  • Online Engagement and Mentorship: We will host a virtual event in order to provide ongoing support through online and offline mentorship, ensuring participants continue contributing after the project ends.
