Many women in Nigeria, especially nursing mothers and young girls, remain digitally excluded due to limited access, literacy, and training opportunities. Despite their eagerness to learn, barriers such as childcare, lack of mentorship, and inadequate digital access hinder participation in online knowledge spaces. Having joined Wikimedia as a nursing mother, I personally experienced how engaging with Wikimedia improved my digital literacy, confidence, and leadership skills. Through micro-grants supports from the Igbo Wikimedians User Group, I have organized successful projects where women continually showed enthusiasm to learn and grow, including my last concluded project “Adding Non-Existing Igbo Names on Igbo Wiktionary” (https://w.wiki/FdVf) which recorded massive turnout of women—many attending with their children and a partnership project with the Mozlla Common Voice Outreach in the Ikwerre Community where these women were also introduced to the Mozilla Common Voice Data Collection. This new project will build upon that momentum by offering structured, two-months slow-paced digital literacy training through Wikimedia projects—Wikimedia Commons and Wiktionary —focused on women, young girls, and nursing mothers. This project aligns with Movement Strategy 2030 Goal 6: “Invest in Skills and Leadership Development”, which emphasizes equitable access to capacity-building and empowering new leaders from underrepresented communities.
