- 6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)
The change we are trying to bring is to improve the reliability, neutrality, and quality of Wikipedia articles related to the history of Tunisia, especially the period between 1950 and 1960.
Currently, many articles about Tunisia on Wikipedia lack proper references or rely on limited and sometimes non-diverse sources. This weak referencing affects the neutrality and credibility of the content. Some important historical events, political developments, and social transformations from the pre- and post-independence period are either poorly documented or supported by insufficient citations.
One of the main challenges is the limited accessibility of primary historical sources. Many important documents, photographs, and newspapers from the 1950–1960 period are only available in physical archives and are not easily accessible to researchers, students, or Wikipedia contributors. This creates a gap between historical knowledge and publicly available, verifiable sources online.
Through this project, we aim to digitize public domain documents, photographs, and newspapers related to the history of Tunisia during this critical decade. By making these materials accessible in digital form, we will:
Provide high-quality, reliable primary sources that can be cited in Wikipedia articles.
Strengthen the neutrality of articles by grounding them in verifiable archival material.
Preserve fragile historical documents and ensure long-term access.
Support editors, researchers, and young contributors in improving Tunisia-related content.
Our main approach includes identifying relevant public domain materials, digitizing them according to archival and technical standards, uploading them to open platforms (such as Wikimedia Commons), and organizing training sessions for contributors on how to use these materials properly as references.
In the long term, this initiative will contribute to building a stronger culture of citation, improving the historical coverage of Tunisia on Wikipedia, and promoting open access to national documentary heritage.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
Planned Activities
Identify Tunisia-related Wikipedia articles (1950–1960) that lack references and images, and create a priority list of needed sources.
Select 5 participants and provide preparatory training on archival research, copyright, and digitization standards.
Coordinate with the Archives Nationales de Tunisie and request permission (at least one month in advance) to access and digitize selected public domain documents.
Organize a 5-day mission to Tunis for on-site digitization of selected documents, newspapers, and photographs, including metadata collection.
Conduct a workshop on uploading digitized materials to Wikimedia Commons with proper copyright and categorization.
Organize a final workshop on integrating these documents into Wikipedia articles with proper citation and neutrality standards.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
The project team consists of 5 volunteers, all active Wikimedia contributors and aware of their involvement in the project.

Role: Project Leader Wikimedia Username: TOUMOU Responsibilities: Overall coordination, communication with the Archives Nationales de Tunisie, supervision of the 5-day digitization mission, organization of workshops, and reporting. Status: Volunteer Four Participants (Houss 2020, نعيم قربوسي , Olfa ovva, Hommi2020) Role: Digitization and Workshop Support Team Responsibilities: Supporting document selection, participating in digitization in Tunis, uploading files to Wikimedia Commons, and improving Wikipedia articles during workshops. Status: Volunteers
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
The project targets active and emerging Wikimedia contributors from the Tunisian community who are interested in history and improving Tunisia-related articles. Before the activities, we will hold a preparatory meeting to explain objectives, copyright rules, and digitization standards, while identifying priority Wikipedia articles that lack references and images. During the 5-day digitization mission at the Archives Nationales de Tunisie, participants will have clear roles for scanning, metadata collection, and documentation, and will take part in two workshops: one for uploading files to Wikimedia Commons and another for integrating sources into Wikipedia articles. After the activities, the team will continue improving articles using the digitized materials, hold a follow-up meeting to evaluate results, track contributions, and encourage participants to share their experience and mentor others within the community.
- 10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)
No
- 10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.
The project idea was discussed with board members of Wikimedia Tunisia, who expressed interest in starting a small GLAM initiative focused on digitizing archival materials related to the history of Tunisia. During these discussions, we agreed that this project could be a first step toward building future collaborations with cultural and archival institutions in Tunisia. The feedback from the board members was positive, and they supported launching this pilot project to test the process of digitization and the use of archival materials to improve Wikipedia articles.

Learning and metrics
[edit]- 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)
Through this project, we hope to learn how digitizing archival materials can improve the quality and referencing of Tunisia-related Wikipedia articles. One key question is whether providing accessible digital documents from archives will help contributors add more reliable references to historical articles. We also want to understand the challenges of collaborating with archival institutions and the process of obtaining permission to digitize public domain materials. Another important learning question is how effective a small team mission (5 participants over 5 days) can be in producing usable digitized content for Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. The data collected, such as the number of documents digitized, files uploaded, and articles improved, will help evaluate the impact of this pilot GLAM initiative and inform future projects.
