Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Digitizing and Voicing Knowledge with multiple Wikiprojects (ID: 22895219)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
Activities Implemented: A series of diverse activities were carried out as part of the project. Among the most notable were fruitful partnerships established with two active associations: The Moroccan Reading Network and Sla Al-Mustaqbal Association. Four recording sessions were held in a professional studio belonging to Sla Al-Mustaqbal in the city of Salé, where selected articles about Morocco were recorded with the participation of eight contributors.
In addition, three training sessions on the Wikisource platform were organized for ten participants, led by Ms. Nanour, a prominent administrator on Arabic Wikisource. The digitization of the heritage book Al-Anis Al-Mutrib also took place over the course of three months of continuous effort.
At the project's conclusion, an in-person workshop was held with nine participants. This session aimed to utilize the transcribed content of the book to enrich various Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia, Wikiquote, and Wiktionary.
Outcomes Achieved: The activities produced several tangible outcomes, including the recording and publishing of three selected articles about Morocco on Arabic Wikipedia, totaling six hours of audio content. A budding Moroccan community around Wikisource was established, and ten enthusiastic new editors were recruited.
The team successfully transcribed and proofread 300 pages of Al-Anis Al-Mutrib, and developed over 20 new pages across different Wikimedia platforms. This initiative marked the first practical introduction to the Wikisource platform in Morocco.
Additionally, the project led to the formation of new partnerships ready to support free knowledge initiatives and the creation of a team of committed volunteers willing to collaborate on the long term within Wikisource.
Effective Approaches Used: Several key strategies proved instrumental in achieving the project's goals, including:
Collaborative Work and Local Partnerships: Partnering with local civil associations and regional Wikimedia groups enabled access to diverse communities and ensured effective logistical and organizational support.
Targeted Participant Selection: Participants were carefully chosen, mostly from the teaching profession, providing a knowledgeable and available base for active volunteering.
Thoughtful Topic Selection: Articles and books were chosen deliberately—such as the featured article on “Salé” to strengthen collaboration with Sla Al-Mustaqbal Association, and a book recommended by The Moroccan Reading Network to align with project goals and ensure their integration into the process.
Balanced Team Composition: The team included both experienced Wikimedia contributors and newcomers to create a dynamic and motivating group dynamic.
Practical Training Approach: The presence of an expert trainer enabled participants to gain real technical skills in working with the platform.
Effective Communication Tools: WhatsApp groups were used to ensure smooth and efficient daily communication, facilitating coordination and rapid updates.
Team Spirit and Shared Responsibility: Participants were engaged in both the planning and implementation stages, fostering a sense of ownership and collective commitment to the project.

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: Integrate new features like spoken articles and words in the Arabic versions of the projects Applying advocacy methods for new initiatives by enhancing the ability to design and execute targeted initiatives, including defining objectives, managing timelines, and measuring impact. Identifying the best practices to identify Moroccan books that have entered the public domain and is eligible for Wikisource enrichment Enhancing volunteer recruitment based on cultural interest Reinforcing partnerships management by leveraging Wikimedia knowledge and mission for mutual improvement Gaining skills in digitizing and proofreading texts to ensure their quality and accuracy. Understanding how to connect Wikisource with Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons for integrated contributions. Assessing Wiki Reader's needs and how to approach them Strengthening collaborative work on projects like proofreading texts and creating audio content. Implementing strategies for promoting cultural narratives on Wikimedia projects, aligning with broader goals of diversity and inclusivity.
During the implementation of the project, the learning questions served as a valuable roadmap that helped me assess performance and identify areas for improvement. By integrating new features such as spoken articles and expanding Arabic content, I learned the importance of engaging audiences through diverse media to enhance accessibility and inclusivity. The process of identifying Moroccan books in the public domain also taught me how to develop a rigorous methodology for cultural documentation and curation.
I also realized that strengthening partnerships and recruiting volunteers requires a clear mission and collaborative planning that aligns with shared interests. I gained practical skills in managing initiatives—from setting objectives and timelines to measuring impact—and improved my abilities in digitization and proofreading to ensure content quality and accuracy.
I plan to use these learnings in the future by designing more effective initiatives that connect various Wikimedia projects, support diverse cultural narratives in sustainable ways, and emphasize inclusive participation through cross-disciplinary collaboration.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Yes, several unexpected challenges arose during the implementation of the activities, both technical and logistical.
The first challenge was scheduling the audio recording sessions. Most participants were full-time employees, making it difficult to coordinate times that suited both their availability and the studio schedule. After some effort and flexibility, I managed to build a timetable that accommodated everyone, but this process took more time than originally anticipated.
The second challenge occurred while working on the book Al-Anis Al-Mutrib on Wikisource. We initially relied on a pre-scanned PDF version, but once proofreading began, it became clear that the scan quality was poor, and participants struggled to recognize and correct the text. To resolve this, I searched for a second copy of the book, re-scanned it with better quality, uploaded it to Wikisource, and created a new index. This recovery process required nearly a full week of additional work but was crucial to saving the project.
A final unexpected issue emerged after we finished proofreading: we discovered that several pages were missing from the new scanned version. To address this, I merged the missing pages from the old version into the new one using the “iLovePDF” platform and reorganized the book accordingly. This process took three more days of focused work, but it was ultimately successful.
These experiences taught me the importance of adaptability, attention to detail, and having backup solutions ready. They also highlighted the value of technical skills in document handling and the need for thorough quality checks at every stage of the project.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
To share the learnings and outcomes of the project, I made sure to involve participants not only in content creation but also in the organizational and logistical aspects of the work. This inclusive approach allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of the processes involved and to develop the skills needed to replicate similar projects in the future.
In fact, one of the participants was particularly inspired by the experience and has already asked for my support in organizing a similar project. I have begun advising her on how to plan and structure it effectively, and I look forward to offering further guidance as she moves forward. This is a promising sign that the project’s impact is already spreading organically within the community.
Additionally, I plan to document the project in a detailed report and share it with relevant Wikimedia and cultural heritage groups. I’m also exploring opportunities to present the project outcomes in local meetups or online forums to inspire others and encourage similar initiatives.
