The Change The main change we are trying to achieve with this proposal is to improve the representation and participation of people with disabilities on Hausa Wikimedia Projects. People with disabilities in Northern Nigeria, especially those in the Hausa-speaking community, are often excluded from digital knowledge spaces. This project aims to empower them to share their stories, knowledge, and experiences, while ensuring their visibility and inclusion in Wikimedia projects. By increasing their involvement, we aim to create a more inclusive and accessible platform for all.
Challenges This kind of disability-inclusive Wikimedia campaign has never been implemented in the Hausa community. Therefore the following are the key challenges we aim to address:
- Underrepresentation in Content: Disability-related content in Hausa is minimal, and stories about people with disabilities are often missing or overlooked. This project will ensure that these stories are documented and shared on Wikimedia.
- Low Participation of Disabled Editors: People with disabilities face barriers to participation in Wikimedia, including lack of awareness and accessibility issues. This project will encourage and train them to become active contributors.
- Lack of Awareness and Skills: Many individuals with disabilities are unaware of how to contribute to Wikimedia projects or feel intimidated by the editing process. Our project will bridge this gap by offering tailored training and support.
- Social Stigma and Cultural Barriers: Negative perceptions of disability often discourage participation. Through this initiative, we will create an inclusive environment that encourages greater engagement and removes these cultural barriers.
Approaches To address these challenges, we will use the following approaches:
