6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The Change The main change we are trying to achieve with this proposal is to improve the representation and participation of people with disabilities on Hausa Wikimedia Projects. People with disabilities in Northern Nigeria, especially those in the Hausa-speaking community, are often excluded from digital knowledge spaces. This project aims to empower them to share their stories, knowledge, and experiences, while ensuring their visibility and inclusion in Wikimedia projects. By increasing their involvement, we aim to create a more inclusive and accessible platform for all.

Challenges This kind of disability-inclusive Wikimedia campaign has never been implemented in the Hausa community. Therefore the following are the key challenges we aim to address:

  • Underrepresentation in Content: Disability-related content in Hausa is minimal, and stories about people with disabilities are often missing or overlooked. This project will ensure that these stories are documented and shared on Wikimedia.
  • Low Participation of Disabled Editors: People with disabilities face barriers to participation in Wikimedia, including lack of awareness and accessibility issues. This project will encourage and train them to become active contributors.
  • Lack of Awareness and Skills: Many individuals with disabilities are unaware of how to contribute to Wikimedia projects or feel intimidated by the editing process. Our project will bridge this gap by offering tailored training and support.
  • Social Stigma and Cultural Barriers: Negative perceptions of disability often discourage participation. Through this initiative, we will create an inclusive environment that encourages greater engagement and removes these cultural barriers.

Approaches To address these challenges, we will use the following approaches:

  • Awareness Campaigns: We will use social media (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) and local outreach to raise awareness about disability inclusion in Wikimedia.
  • Inclusive Training: We will offer specialized training for people with disabilities to help them learn how to contribute effectively to Wikimedia projects.
  • Workshops and Edit-a-thons: These hands-on events will engage participants in editing and creating content related to disabilities, empowering them to share their experiences and knowledge.
  • Collaboration with Disability Organizations: We will partner with local disability organizations to gather reliable content and connect with potential contributors.
  • Mentorship and Support: We will provide continuous mentorship to new contributors, ensuring that they feel confident and supported in their ongoing contributions.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Planned Activities

The following are the planned activities in order to achieve the objectives of the project:

Pre-event Planning and Outreach

  • We will create awareness about the campaign through social media channels and share flyers to attract the attention of participants, especially people with disabilities and their advocates.
  • Collaborate with local disability-focused organizations and inclusive education centers to support the campaign, such as: Tudun Maliki Special Education School and Kanawa Educational Foundation for the Disabled.
  • Organize an online meeting with facilitators and community leaders to finalize event details.
