Phase 1, where we documented 750 indigenous South Sudanese names on Wikidata and uploaded around 100 pronunciation audio files to Wikimedia Commons, Phase 2 will expand coverage to roughly 12 additional tribes whose names remain undocumented online. South Sudan's linguistic diversity means many communities are still entirely absent from Wikimedia projects. This phase will deepen our reach into underrepresented tribal communities, strengthen pronunciation accuracy through native-speaker recordings, and continue building structured, reliable data on indigenous naming conventions for a global audience.

Phase 2 of Wikinames South Sudan will extend our documentation work to approximately 12 new tribes not covered in Phase 1. Activities include: identifying and partnering with community elders and linguists from each new tribe, researching and verifying names and their cultural meanings, adding entries to Wikidata, expanding Wikipedia name lists, and recording pronunciation audio for Wikimedia Commons. We will also run refresher training sessions for the team and any new volunteers to maintain documentation quality and consistency with Phase 1 standards.

Target participants remain South Sudanese community members, linguists, cultural experts, and Wikimedia contributors — this time drawn specifically from the 12 additional tribes we aim to cover. We will engage participants through outreach to tribal representatives and cultural associations before activities begin, involve them directly in name and pronunciation collection during the project, and maintain post-project engagement through mentorship and continued online support, as we did in Phase 1.
