Other (please specify) Documenting and Improving South Sudanese Indigenous names on Wikidata and Commons

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

We aim to preserve and document indigenous South Sudanese names from various tribes, ensuring their representation on Wikimedia projects like Wikidata and Wikipedia. Currently, many South Sudanese names are missing or poorly documented, limiting their accessibility and recognition. Our main challenge is the lack of structured, reliable online data on these names and their correct pronunciations. To address this, we will expand our previous efforts by adding more names to Wikidata, creating Wikipedia lists, and recording pronunciation audio for Wikimedia Commons. Through community engagement, field research, and digital documentation, we will ensure these names are accurately recorded and accessible to a global audience.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Our project, *Wikinames South Sudan 2025* (linked [here](https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikinames_South_Sudan_2025)), will involve collecting and documenting indigenous South Sudanese names from various tribes. Key activities include researching and verifying names, adding them to Wikidata, creating Wikipedia name lists, and recording pronunciation audios for Wikimedia Commons. We will collaborate with local communities, linguists, and cultural organizations to ensure accuracy and representation. Additionally, we will conduct training sessions on Wikimedia contributions and digital archiving to empower local volunteers in sustaining this effort.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

1. Wani Yusif [User: Waniyusif94] - Facilitate the coordination of the event 2. Woja Emmanuel [Woja emmanuel] - Communications and as well Community Liaison 3. George Levi [User: George Levi] - Trainer Wikidata 4. Likambo Isaac [User: LikamboisaacK]- Trainer Wikipedia 5. Lomora Ronald [User: Lomoraronald] - Finance managment

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Our target participants include South Sudanese community members, linguists, cultural experts, and Wikimedia contributors, particularly those from underrepresented tribes. We will engage participants through community outreach, partnerships with cultural organizations, and training sessions on Wikimedia projects. Before activities, we will collaborate with tribal representatives to gather accurate name data. During the project, participants will contribute names, pronunciations, and cultural details to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. After the activities, we will maintain engagement through follow-up training, mentorship, and online support to encourage continued contributions and ensure sustainability.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

Yes

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. 11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

We discussed this project as we were closing the Oral History project, which highlighted the significant absence of South Sudanese names on Wikimedia platforms. This realization led to the birth of this initiative, focusing on documenting indigenous names on Wikidata, Wikipedia, and Wikimedia Commons. We engaged community members through on-wiki discussions, meetings, and direct collaboration to refine the project and ensure alignment with ongoing Wikimedia efforts. More details can be found on the project’s Meta-Wiki page: [Wikinames South Sudan 2025](https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikinames_South_Sudan_2025).

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

Through this project, we hope to learn how documenting indigenous South Sudanese names can improve representation on Wikimedia platforms, especially on Wikidata and Wikipedia. Our key learning questions include:

1. How does adding South Sudanese names to Wikidata enhance the discoverability and accuracy of cultural identity information? 2. What are the best approaches for engaging communities in contributing name documentation and pronunciations? 3. How can we ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of Indigenous name documentation efforts within Wikimedia projects? 4. What impact does name documentation have on language preservation and community engagement in Wikimedia projects?

The data we collect from contributions, community participation, and feedback will help us refine future efforts and scale the initiative effectively.
