March 8 is globally recognized as International Women’s Day (IWD), a moment dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements and advancing gender equality. In alignment with the WikiGap initiative and the Visible WikiWomen campaign, this project seeks to increase the visibility of unsung women heroes in Nigeria across diverse fields such as leadership, human rights, culture, education, and community development, whose contributions remain largely undocumented on Wikimedia platforms.
The project will contribute to bridging the gender and knowledge gaps on Wikipedia by documenting and creating high-quality articles about notable Nigerian women whose stories are absent or underrepresented. Through trainings and edit-a-thons activities, participants will be equipped with the skills to sustainably contribute women-focused content to Wikimedia projects.
While the project complements existing International Women’s Day programs in Nigeria, it is strategically strengthened by a partnership with the African Women’s Leadership Institute (https://www.womenli.org/). This collaboration, built on over a year of engagement and mutual understanding, will provide access to women leaders and participants, as well as institutional support that will support the project. The partnership ensures that the project reaches diverse women leaders and emerging changemakers, while embedding Wikimedia contributions within broader women’s leadership and advocacy efforts in Nigeria.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The project will gather Nigerian women in Abuja, Nigeria for a capacity-building and content-creation program focused on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Implemented in partnership with the African Women’s Leadership Institute (AWLI).
The African Women’s Leadership Institute has been formally engaged and has confirmed its interest in partnering on this project, recognizing its potential to amplify women’s voices and visibility within open knowledge spaces. AWLI will support participant mobilization and outreach.
Activities will commence around International Women’s Day (March 8) with a two-day in-person training workshop in Abuja. The training will introduce participants to:
The Wikimedia ecosystem (Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata)
Wikipedia editing policies and guidelines, including notability, verifiability, and reliable sourcing
Gender gaps on Wikipedia and the importance of documenting women’s contributions
Practical hands-on editing sessions focused on creating and improving articles about unsung Nigerian women heroes
Following the in-person training, participants will take part in a supported edit-a-thon period, during which they will apply their skills to create new articles and improve existing content related to Nigerian women. Experienced Wikimedia facilitators will provide mentorship, online support, and quality review to ensure contributions meet community standards.
