The change we aim to achieve is the empowerment of youth in the Niger Delta region by enhancing their skills in content creation and digital storytelling through Wikimedia platforms. This initiative seeks to:
Amplify Local Voices: Elevate indigenous perspectives and narratives by equipping selected youths with the tools and knowledge necessary to document and share their cultural heritage, stories, and experiences on platforms like Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
- Promote Cultural Preservation: Encourage the documentation of local languages, traditions, and histories that are at risk of being lost, thus fostering a stronger sense of identity among youth and communities.
- Enhance Digital Literacy: Build essential digital skills that empower participants to engage with technology effectively, bridging the digital divide in the Niger Delta.
2. Challenges or Problems We Are Trying to Solve
The Niger Delta region faces several socio-economic challenges that hinder youth engagement and development:
- Limited Access to Education and Resources: Many young people in the region have inadequate access to formal education and digital tools, impacting their ability to create and share content online.
- Underrepresentation in Global Narratives: The voices of Niger Delta youth are often marginalized in national and international discourse, resulting in a lack of awareness surrounding their unique cultures and challenges.
- Cultural Erosion: Rapid urbanization and globalization pose threats to traditional practices and languages, making the documentation and preservation of local cultures crucial.
- Skill Gaps in Content Creation: There is a lack of training programs focused on effective communication, digital storytelling, and multimedia production, which limits opportunities for self-expression among youth.
3. Main Approaches to Achieve Change:
To address these challenges and bring about the desired change, we will implement the following approaches through the two-day Wikimedia Refinery and Capacity Building Program:
- Hands-On Training Workshops: Conduct interactive sessions on relevant topics such as Wikipedia editing, photography, storytelling, and the use of multimedia tools. Participants will gain practical experience creating and editing content, understanding copyright issues, and sourcing information responsibly.
- Mentorship program: our aim through the mentorship program is to create support systems by connecting participants with experienced editors on Wikimedia projects and then create local hubs for sustainability.
- Collaborative Projects: Engage participants in small group projects to create content that reflects their local culture. By working together, they can learn from each other, build teamwork skills, and produce meaningful outputs that can be published on Wikimedia platforms.
- Promotion of Language and Cultural Heritage: Encourage participants to focus on documenting local languages, folklore, and traditional practices. This approach not only promotes cultural preservation but also elevates local narratives within the global digital landscape.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
