The digital landscape, while a powerful tool for connection and expression, often leads to stereotypes and biases, particularly against women and marginalized groups, especially in Northern Ghana (Upper West Region). This is especially true in the realm of art and culture, where women's contributions are frequently overlooked. By organizing an Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon in Ghana, we aim to challenge these inequalities and amplify the voices of women artists. Specifically, we seek to: Increase the visibility of women artists: By creating and editing Wikipedia articles on women artists in Ghanaian Language (Waali), we will make their work more accessible to a global audience, ensuring their contributions are recognized and celebrated. Combat gender bias in online information: We will actively work to correct gender bias in existing Wikipedia articles, ensuring that women's achievements are accurately represented and fairly assessed. We have been organizing online trainings session for community members, both new and old, on how to edit or write articles on Wikipedia and other projects. The proposed strategies and activities are informed by best practices in digital activism, community organizing, and knowledge production. They are designed to be flexible, inclusive, and effective, even in the face of resource constraints. We take this approach because: Capacity Building and Training: By providing comprehensive training, we empower participants to become confident Wikipedia editors and advocates for gender equality. This approach is supported by numerous studies that demonstrate the positive impact of training on knowledge production and digital literacy. Outreach and Promotion: Effective outreach and promotion are important for attracting a diverse range of participants and generating public interest. By using social media and other digital tools, we can reach a wide audience and encourage participation.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The main activities include:
Edithon contest for one month to create and improve biographies of women on Wall Wikipedia Incubator.
The edit-a-thon will contribute to the preservation and promotion of the Waali language, which is an important part of Ghana's cultural heritage.
By using the Waali language, the articles will be more accessible and relevant to the local community, especially those who may not be fluent in English.
The edit-a-thon will highlight the achievements of African women artists, who are often recognized in mainstream media and historical records.
By documenting their contributions, we empower these women and inspire future generations.
Creating or improving Wikidata items for those that are lacking
Creating and improving Wikidata items for African women in the arts is important for several reasons:
By creating Wikidata items, we increase the visibility of these women artists on search engines and other online platforms.
More accurate and comprehensive search results can be achieved when Wikidata items are linked to Wikipedia articles and other online resources.
Wikidata provides a structured and sustainable way to preserve information about cultural heritage figures.
By creating detailed Wikidata items, we facilitate future research and scholarship on African women artists.
Upload images of the African women in art onto Wikimedia Commons.
Uploading images of African women in the arts to Wikimedia Commons is important for several reasons:
Images can help to visualize the work of these artists, making their contributions more tangible and understandable.
By uploading images to Wikimedia Commons, we make them freely available to anyone in the world.
These images can be used by educators, researchers, and students to learn about Ghanaian art and culture.
Images can enhance the quality and readability of Wikipedia articles.
