Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

Our activities basically involved in-person and online. Results achieved Increased Edits: The contest successfully tracked the contributions of community members which I shared the link to the outreach dashboard. New Editor Recruitment: The in-person program was particularly effective in bringing in new individuals to contribute to Wikipedia. Almost all the participants were new to Wikipedia. We truly have new editors are still editing on the community's wiki. Training of New Editors: The in-person sessions facilitated the training and upskilling of these new recruits. We blended this in-person with the online training sessions via zoom.

Most Effective Approaches: In-person Engagement: The direct, face-to-face interaction of the in-person program proved to be the most successful approach. This likely fostered a stronger sense of community, provided immediate support and guidance, and built confidence in new editors. The hands-on training environment would have been invaluable for those new to Wikipedia editing. On like the in-person, we faced challenges on the online sessions as a lot participants mostly complained of bad networks.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: Through this project, we aim to answer the following key questions: How effective are these strategies in increasing the visibility of African women artists on a global scale? To what extent will this project contribute to the preservation of African cultural heritage and the Waali language? What are the challenges and opportunities for women artists and community members in participating in these activities?

How effective are these strategies in increasing the visibility of African women artists on a global scale? I learned that the strategies we implemented, particularly creating a significant number of Wikipedia articles about African women artists, are indeed effective. The in-person training sessions were crucial in empowering participants to contribute meaningfully to Wikipedia, which directly increased the online presence and global visibility of these artists.

To what extent will this project contribute to the preservation of African cultural heritage and the Waali language? I learned that the project contributes significantly to the preservation of African cultural heritage and the Waali language. By documenting the work of these artists and creating content in Waali, we are ensuring that this knowledge is preserved and made accessible to both local communities and a global audience. This strengthens the connection between the artists, their cultural heritage, and their linguistic identity.

What are the challenges and opportunities for women artists and community members in participating in these activities? I learned that there's a substantial opportunity to engage young women in these activities. Their strong participation in the face-to-face training sessions demonstrates their keen interest and willingness to be involved. This highlights the importance of providing accessible training and creating inclusive spaces. While specific challenges were not always explicitly stated, the success of the in-person training indicates that overcoming barriers like access to resources and technology is essential for maximizing participation.

How I hope to use these learnings in the future: I plan to prioritize in-person training, as it proved to be highly effective in engaging participants and fostering a sense of community. I will also explore ways to combine this with online resources to reach a broader audience.

I will focus on targeted outreach to young women, recognizing their strong interest in participating in such initiatives.

I will continue to emphasize the creation of content in local languages, like Waali, to ensure cultural preservation and accessibility.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

During the implementation, I encountered both positive and negative unexpected situations:

Negative: A significant number of participants faced network issues that prevented them from joining the online sessions.

Positive: The in-person training sessions were very well-attended, with a large number of participants, especially young women, exceeding the target number.

From these experiences, I learned:

The importance of reliable infrastructure: The network issues highlighted the critical need for reliable internet access for online participation. In future projects, I will need to explore alternative solutions or provide better support for participants facing connectivity challenges. This could include identifying reliable internet access points, providing offline resources, or offering hybrid models with more emphasis on in-person components.

The strong interest in in-person engagement: The high turnout for the face-to-face training demonstrated the value of direct interaction and community building. This reinforces the idea that in-person events can be a powerful tool for engaging participants, especially in communities where online access may be limited or unreliable.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We have posted the results on our social media platforms where we tag communities such as Dagbani Wikimedians User Group and its affiliates, Ghanaian Pidgin Wikimedians Community. I am also writing diff post with my team members where we will share and tag these communities and others.
