6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Building on the 2025 Konvent Art+Feminism edit-a-thon, which successfully mobilized 50 participants and generated substantial Wikimedia contributions, this project seeks to move from short-term activation to sustained editorial depth and community retention. The edit-a-thon format proved effective for mobilization and visibility. However, our final report revealed structural limitations: high demand for mentorship, persistent confidence barriers among new editors, and difficulty sustaining long-term engagement beyond a one-day event. The change we now aim to bring is a structural deepening of that model. We seek to transform episodic participation into sustained, care-centered editorial practice — particularly around underrepresented genealogies within the Catalan and broader Wikimedia ecosystem, although contributions in other languages will also be warmly welcomed.

Main challenges: From our previous experience, we identified five structural challenges:

1. Retention gaps after one-day events. 2. Confidence and legitimacy barriers, especially among first-time editors. 3. Limited time for deep research and source verification. 4. Emotional and cognitive overload in intensive single-day formats 5. Structural care barriers, especially for participants with caregiving responsibilities. 6. Additionally, smaller linguistic communities such as Catalan face amplified vulnerability to content gaps and editor scarcity.

Main approaches: To address these challenges, we are evolving from a one-day event to a 15-day residency model. This shift represents an innovation within our local Wikimedia ecosystem. Our strategy includes: 1. Sustained editorial time A residency enables slower, research-intensive editing, improving quality and article resilience. 2. Structural inclusion through care infrastructure Providing shared meals and childcare removes participation barriers identified in previous editions. In line with an ethics of care, rather than expecting unpaid invisible labor, we are designing conditions that recognize care as central to participation. 3. Integrated mentorship and collective review Instead of compressed technical onboarding, participants will engage in ongoing peer support and structured reflection sessions. 4. Cross-project integration We will intentionally connect work across Wikipedia, Wikidata and Commons to strengthen long-term content stability. 5. Modeling replicable methodology This residency will function as a prototype for care-centered Wikimedia engagement that other cultural institutions can adapt.

Why this approach? Our 2025 experience demonstrated that care-based methodologies improve participation and belonging. However, it also showed that depth and sustainability require extended timeframes. Residencies are widely used in artistic and research contexts to generate concentrated work and community bonding. By adapting this format to Wikimedia editing, we introduce a structural innovation: editing not as an isolated activity, but as a supported collective practice. If successful, this model can inform future Wikimedia community-building strategies, particularly in rural and decentralized contexts.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project is structured in five interconnected phases that align with our strategic approaches: sustained editorial time, care-based inclusion, mentorship, cross-project integration, and methodological documentation.

Phase 1 – Community Engagement and Open Call

  • Launch of a preliminary public call through Konvent, Amical Wikimedia, and Art+Feminism Barcelona networks.
  • Selection of 8–10 residents based on editorial commitment and alignment with the residency’s focus on underrepresented genealogies.
  • Creation of a public Meta-Wiki project page and Program & Events Dashboard.
  • Coordination meetings with Amical Wikimedia to align methodology, tracking tools, and community integration.
  • Preliminary identification of editing lines and research areas

Final participation confirmation will be contingent on grant approval. Purpose: Purpose: Advance preparation strengthens commitment and ensures that participants arrive with clearly defined editorial goals.

Phase 2 – Pre-Residency Online Preparation

  • Online onboarding session covering Wikimedia policies (neutrality, notability, reliable sourcing).
  • Technical support session for new or returning editors.
  • Shared materials on systemic bias, language politics, and open knowledge infrastructures.

Initial mapping of cross-project editing strategies (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Commons).

Purpose: Reducing technical and conceptual barriers in advance allows in-person time to focus on deeper editorial work.

Phase 3 – 15-Day Editing Residency at Konvent (3–16 August 2026) The residency combines sustained editorial work with collective reflection and knowledge exchange.

A. Daily Editing Sessions

  • Dedicated blocks of individual and collaborative editing.
  • Research, source verification, drafting, and improvement of articles.
  • Cross-project contributions to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons.

B. Peer Review and Mentorship Circles

  • Group reviews of ongoing articles.
  • Collaborative discussion around neutrality, admissibility, sourcing gaps, and content resilience.
  • Shared troubleshooting and editorial support

C. Thematic Talks and Conversations

  • Internal sessions led by organizers and invited contributors on topics such as:
  • Systemic bias in Wikimedia projects.
  • Language politics and smaller linguistic ecosystems.
  • Open knowledge and the privatization of digital infrastructures.
  • Ethical and critical use of AI tools in editing.
  • Connections with other free culture communities.
  • Strategies for sustaining participation and community engagement beyond single events.

These sessions strengthen long-term editorial capacity and critical awareness.

D. Residents’ Project Presentations

  • Each resident shares their editorial focus and research process.
  • Collective feedback and discussion on contextual gaps and sourcing strategies.

This fosters accountability, peer learning, and stronger article foundations.

E. Public Sharing Event

  • Open event at Konvent where residents share processes, reflections, and editorial challenges.
  • Emphasis on methodology and knowledge production rather than finished outputs

F. Residency Podcast (Live Documentation)

  • Recording of conversations and reflections during the residency.
  • Production of a podcast episode documenting the methodology, dilemmas, and collective learning.
  • Publication through Konvent and affiliated networks.

Purpose of podcast: To create accessible documentation and extend the project’s relational impact beyond participants.

Phase 4 – Documentation and Knowledge Sharing

  • Reprint of the existing “Feréstegues” editing fanzine, previously developed for the 2025 edit-a-thon and now out of stock.
  • Digital redistribution of the fanzine under open license.
  • Brief written summary of outcomes shared through Wikimedia and partner channels.

Purpose:To reinforce continuity with previous work and ensure learning materials remain accessible.

Phase 5 – Post-Residency Follow-up

  • One informal online check-in session (optional attendance).
  • Sharing of key outcomes and documentation links.
  • Open invitation for continued engagement within existing Wikimedia networks.

Purpose: To encourage retention without creating additional organizational burden.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Editing as an Act of Love: Wikipedia Residency at Konvent will be coordinated by a team combining experienced Wikimedia editors, cultural organisers, and researchers working on gender gaps and knowledge equity in digital platforms. The project is organised in collaboration with Konvent (Cal Rosal), Amical Wikimedia, and Art+Feminism Barcelona, ensuring strong Wikimedia community involvement together with the organisational capacity of an established cultural residency space.

Project Coordination Marta Delatte – Wikimedia username: Liquendatalab PhD in Digital Media and co-founder of Liquen Data Lab. Marta will co-coordinate the project and oversee the conceptual and methodological framework of the residency. Her research has explored gender participation gaps and systemic bias within collaborative digital platforms, including an extensive case study on Wikipedia communities. Since 2018, she has been actively organising feminist edit-a-thons in Barcelona as part of the Art+Feminism initiative and collaborative editing programs focused on underrepresented knowledge.

Lucy Tcherno – Wikimedia username: Anavi22 Cultural outreach officer and curator at Konvent. Lucy will co-coordinate the residency logistics and participant support, including accommodation, local coordination, and public programming at Konvent. She has extensive experience organising international artistic residencies and community-based cultural events, and has previously coordinated Wikipedia edit-a-thons hosted at Konvent.

Local Institutional Support Pep Espelt – Founder and Director of Konvent. Pep Espelt founded Konvent (Cal Rosal) and currently directs its cultural programming. He will support the residency through the coordination of the space, institutional partnerships, and the integration of the residency within Konvent’s broader cultural and community activities. Konvent has hosted numerous artistic residencies, research programs, and collaborative cultural initiatives, providing a stable infrastructure for the project.

Wikimedia Community Mentorship and Technical Support Núria Ribas Valls – Wikimedia username: Kowalskyn President of Amical Wikimedia. Núria Ribas Valls will support the residency as President of Amical Wikimedia, contributing both institutional perspective and hands-on mentoring. Notably, she began her Wikimedia journey as a participant in one of the first feminist edit-a-thons organised by the team in 2018. Her trajectory reflects the long-term impact of these initiatives in fostering new editors and community leadership. During the 2025 Konvent edit-a-thon, she contributed technical support and mentoring, and will continue this role during the residency by supporting participants in editing practices, Wikimedia policies, and engagement with the Catalan-language ecosystem.

Ester Bonet Solé – Wikimedia username: Tiputini Senior Wikimedia editor and promoter of Viquidones initiative Ester Bonet Solé has been a key mentor in all previous edit-a-thons organised by the team and plays a central role in sustaining their editorial and pedagogical approach. She is a long-standing contributor to the Catalan Wikipedia and a specialist in discourse analysis from a gender perspective, as well as one of the promoters of the Viquidones initiative working to reduce gender bias in Wikipedia. Her involvement ensures continuity, depth, and methodological rigor across the project. In March 2016, she created the 500,000th article in the Catalan Wikipedia, dedicated to the Norwegian painter Oda Krohg, and has served on the boards of Amical Wikimedia (2017–2021) and Wikimedia España (until 2024). During the residency, she will provide sustained mentorship and technical support, guiding participants through key editorial processes such as notability assessment, sourcing strategies, and community review. Her role is particularly critical in enabling new editors to move beyond initial participation towards confident and autonomous contribution.

Facilitators and Editing Support Additional experienced editors from Amical Wikimedia and the Art+Feminism Barcelona community will support the residency through introductory editing workshops, mentoring sessions, and ongoing technical assistance during collaborative editing sessions.

Their role will include:

  • introducing Wikipedia editing practices to new editors
  • mentoring participants throughout the residency
  • supporting article research and bibliographic sourcing
  • assisting with Wikimedia policies and technical questions

Participants The residency will host 10–12 selected participants working on creating or improving Wikipedia content related to underrepresented genealogies across different fields of knowledge. Participants may include researchers, artists, cultural workers, archivists, writers, and community organisers. Some participants may already have editing experience, while others will be new editors supported through mentoring and collaborative editing sessions. In addition to the residency participants, some open editing moments and public activities may allow additional contributors from the local community and the broader Catalan Wikimedia ecosystem to participate in specific sessions.

Collective Experience The organising team brings extensive experience facilitating Wikimedia editing initiatives, edit-a-thons, and educational programs addressing knowledge gaps and gender bias in Wikipedia. For example: Ester Bonet Solé (User: Tiputini) has organised or facilitated 28 Wikimedia programs, engaging over 700 editors, contributing to the creation of more than 2,200 articles, and generating tens of millions of article views through participant contributions. Tiputini – Programs & Events Dashboard Núria Ribas Valls (User: Kowalskyn) has led multiple Wikimedia educational and editing programs, with participants contributing over 421,000 words and more than 1,000 references across Wikimedia projects. Kowalskyn – Programs & Events Dashboard Marta Delatte (User: Liquendatalab) has organised collaborative editing programs and feminist edit-a-thons through Liquen Data Lab and Art+Feminism Barcelona, contributing to initiatives that have added tens of thousands of words and hundreds of references to Wikipedia. Liquendatalab – Programs & Events Dashboard Collectively, the team has facilitated numerous Wikimedia activities across Catalonia and internationally, supporting both experienced editors and new contributors while fostering inclusive and collaborative editing environments.

Community Support The project is supported by the Art+Feminism global community, which has expressed interest in endorsing the initiative and helping amplify the call for participants and the outcomes of the residency through its international network.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Target participants The residency is designed for 8–10 selected participants who meet at least one of the following profiles: Wikimedia editors (new or experienced) interested in working on underrepresented genealogies.

Cultural workers, researchers, artists, educators, and independent scholars engaged with open knowledge practices.

Contributors from smaller linguistic or decentralized contexts, particularly within Catalan-speaking territories.

Individuals connected to feminist, queer, and free culture networks.

The Editing as an Act of Love – Wikipedia Residency at Konvent aims to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants. The residency recognises that some participants may have caregiving responsibilities, and we encourage the participation of parents, caregivers, and families. While the residency is primarily designed for adult participants, minors may occasionally be present in the space or participate in specific moments of the program when accompanied by their parents, legal guardians, or designated adult tutors.

The residency follows the Konvent Code of Conduct and Friendly Space Policy, aligned with the Wikimedia Foundation Friendly Space Policy. To ensure a safe environment:

  • minors must always be accompanied and supervised by their parent or guardian
  • no one-on-one unsupervised interactions between organizers and minors are planned
  • all participants are expected to follow the Friendly Space Policy and respectful conduct guidelines

11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

The idea for the Editing as an Act of Love – Wikipedia Residency at Konvent emerged from previous collaborations between the organizers and the Wikimedia community in Catalonia, particularly through edit-a-thons organised with Amical Wikimedia and Art+Feminism Barcelona. In August 2025, the Konvent cultural centre hosted the Art+Feminism edit-a-thon at Konvent, which brought together experienced editors and new contributors working on gender gaps in Wikipedia. That experience highlighted the value of creating longer, slower editing spaces that allow participants to research, write, and mentor each other over several days rather than in a single event. Building on that experience, the organizers discussed the possibility of a Wikipedia editing residency with members of the Amical Wikimedia community, including experienced editors who have agreed to participate as mentors and technical facilitators in the project. The proposal has also been shared informally with members of the Art+Feminism community, who have expressed interest in supporting and amplifying the call for participants through their international network. The project aligns with ongoing Wikimedia initiatives aimed at addressing gender gaps and underrepresented knowledge, and contributes to strengthening editing communities connected to the Catalan-language Wikipedia. Community members involved in the planning of the project include:

  • Núria Ribas Valls (User: Kowalskyn) – President of Amical Wikimedia
  • Ester Bonet Solé (User: Tiputini) – experienced editor and promoter of the Viquidones initiative
  • additional members of the Art+Feminism Barcelona community

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

Through the Editing as an Act of Love – Wikipedia Residency at Konvent, we aim to explore how slower, care-oriented editing environments can support more sustainable participation in Wikimedia projects. The main questions we hope to learn from include:

1. How does a residency format influence editor retention and confidence compared to single-day edit-a-thons? Many Wikimedia activities take the form of short edit-a-thons. This project will help us understand whether a multi-day residency format allows participants to develop stronger editing skills, produce more complete articles, and feel more confident continuing to contribute after the event.

2. What kinds of mentoring and collaborative practices are most effective for supporting new editors? The residency will bring together experienced editors and new contributors working side by side over several days. We hope to learn how peer mentoring, shared research time, and collaborative editing sessions influence learning and participation.

3. How can Wikimedia activities better support participants with caregiving responsibilities? The project intentionally welcomes participants with family or caregiving responsibilities. We want to learn how residency formats, flexible schedules, and childcare support may reduce barriers to participation in Wikimedia projects.

4. How can cultural residency spaces contribute to the Wikimedia ecosystem? Konvent is an established cultural residency space. This project will explore how cultural institutions and residency formats can serve as environments for sustained Wikimedia editing and community-building.

The insights gathered from this project will help inform future collaborations between Wikimedia communities, cultural institutions, and initiatives addressing knowledge gaps.

18. What are your Wikimedia project targets in numbers (metrics)? (required)
