Language lies at the heart of cultural identity. It enables people to connect deeply, fostering bonds that strengthen community and unity. Esan, like many Nigerian languages, stands out for its unique sounds, rhythms, and expressions. Language is more than words; it’s a bridge that connects generations and preserves the essence of a people. Overtime, the bridge (language) that ought to connect the older generation to the new generation is endangered and face possible extinction due to lack of teaching, learning and transmission of the Esan language. “A language is in danger when its speakers cease to use it, use it in an increasingly reduced number of communicative domains, and cease to pass it on from one generation to the next. That is, there are no new speakers, adults or children” UNESCO (2003). Since late 90’s, parents have long ceased to speak or communicate in Esan language with their children due preference for foreign language (English language) which is seen as a measurement of intelligence, brilliance and prestige/success in today’s society. The “dominant culture” syndrome of English language as the ‘official language’ in Nigeria has adversely contributed to the decline in the utilization of Esan and other marginalized or minoritized languages in Nigeria in day-to-day communication let alone its adoption and democratization in the digital spaces like other major languages such as the Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo languages. The inauguration of language Incubator of the Wikimedia Foundation in 2006, have helped hundreds of endanger languages speakers across the globe to document, revitalized, and preserve their language. The change we seek to achieve is to create awareness about the existence of the Esan language Wikipedia in the Incubator, which “serves as the nurturing ground for aspiring language editions of Wikimedia projects, a hallowed space where linguistic diversity finds expression, and cultures take root in the global digital encyclopedia.” The language Incubator we serve as an open space for us to recruit Esan language enthusiasts, speakers, professionals, teachers/writers and the digital natives to collaborate in achieving a common goal of revitalizing, preserving, and digitization of the Esan language to increase its online presence. This will foster learning, teaching, and transmission of the language between the older and new generation of Esan language speakers.
