As a Wikimedia organizer based in Ondo State, Nigeria, I noticed a gap in representation of the Owo community's cultural heritage on Wikimedia projects, despite its regional significance. This is why I led the first Wikimedia awareness and training in the Owo community 'Preservation of Owo Cultural Heritage on Wikimedia.' The project spanned two months, from October to December 2024, resulting in 60 articles improved and 62 pictures uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
You can learn more about the project here. https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/Preservation_of_Owo_Cultural_Heritage_on_Wikimedia_(ID:_22756409)/Final_Report
https://diff.wikimedia.org/2025/01/18/preservation-of-owo-cultural-heritage-on-wikimedia-projects/
One of the project's key achievements was captivating the interest of the Owo Cultural Group from Achievers University, leading to collaborations on Owo heritage and Igogo Festival stories. A photo of Queen Oronsen's statue, linked to the Igogo Festival, was taken at Olowo Palace and is now documented on Wikimedia Commons and featured in a related Wikipedia article. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Statue_of_Queen_Oronsen.jpg
A day tour at Owo National Museum was organized, resulting in sculptures, artefacts, and artwork being uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Owo_Museum_Tour_10.jpg
Building on this success, I intend to expand coverage of Owo cultural heritage on Wikimedia by creating new articles and conducting tours in underrepresented landmarks such as Iyere Palace and Ikoko Market as initial training sessions was focused on minor edits on Wikipedia and documenting Owo Museum resources on Wikicommons.
The project aims to train 50 retained editors on how to create articles about Owo culture and introduce 20 new participants leveraging previous collaboration with the Owo cultural group from Achievers University. This proposed two month-long endeavour holds the guarantee of documenting quality images of Owo cultural heritage such as food (Papala, Korowu Soup e.t.c) and clothings (Sanyan, Kowojo, Alaari e.t.c) on wikicommons while addressing content gaps in Wikipedia articles about the community.
The following articles about Owo Community are missing on Wikipedia
1. Olowo Korodo 2. Ikoko Market 3. Courtyards (Ugha) 4. Chief Aralepo, 7. Imade College Owo. 8. Owo High School. 9. Methodist High School, Owo. 10. St Louis Catholic Hospital, Owo.
Participants will be trained in contributing effectively to various Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia and Wikicommon. This comprises creating Wikipedia accounts for the 20 new participants (understanding core content policies and general editing principles, and making minor edits) and training the 50 existing editors on how to create new articles on Wikipedia as well as extensive training on Wikicommon uploads policies.
Tesleemah, as an article for creation reviewer on English Wikipedia, will train participants on how to identify and create notable articles. Weekly trainings every Saturday will be launched to monitor quality contributions during the project.
These skills will enable them to create content and upload high-quality images related to individuals, places, and institutions in Owo. To ensure progress and to provide assistance during the project, we will utilize the organizer tool and outreach dashboard. These tools will track contributions and offer one-on-one support to offline and online editors, further enabling engagement and effective participation.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The project will transit for two months (5 July 2025 - 5 September 2025). Expanding Coverage of Owo Cultural Heritage on Wikimedia 2.0 activities will be carried out through a comprehensive design:
1. Conducting a two-day in-person workshop: For two days, participants will obtain hands-on training on expanding coverage of Owo cultural heritage on Wikimedia projects. This workshop will cover crucial skills such as account creation and basic edits for new editors, while existing ones will be trained on how to create new articles. With the first physical training being the 2nd week of the campaign and the second physical training, it will be held on the 5th week of the campaign.
2. Hosting three batches of online support training: To enhance participants' editing proficiency on Wikipedia and Wikicommons, the project will present three online sessions. Experienced facilitators will guide these sessions, targeting areas where participants need improvement. With the first online training being the 1st week of the campaign while the second and third online sessions would be scheduled to be held in the 3rd and 4th weeks of the campaign, respectively.
3. Edit-a-thon, Image Upload and Owo Tour: After a month of extensive training, an edit-a-thon focusing on improving and creating content about the Owo community will be launched for a month. While this is ongoing, a day tour engaging the targeted participants to underrepresented landmarks in Owo, such as Ikoko Market and Iyere Palace, will be facilitated. This will enhance documentation of Owo cultural heritage on the Wikicommons.
4. Assessment, Survey, and Feedback session: At the end of this project, an assessment session will take place. This session will have to do with assessing participants' work, attending to queries, and disseminating certificates. Outstanding contributors would be awarded with gift vouchers. A devoted WhatsApp group will serve as a forum for interaction, motivating participants to edit and seek guidance.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. - 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
The target participants for our project are 70 youth residents of the Owo Community (50 already existing editors and 20 new editors). A significant portion of these youths are enrolled in tertiary institutions. The already existing editors have been retained in Owo wiki commmunity from a similar project I led. They are aware of an upcoming project. Hence, I will engage them on the already created whatsapp platform
We will engage the new editors through collaboration with previous partners, Owo Cultural Group from Achievers University, Owo Local Government Area Students Union, and Owo Youth Network. We also aim to leverage the media to provide immense publicity to connect with these potential participants before the project's implementation.
During the project, we will actively promote the training, guaranteeing that new participants gain the vital knowledge and skills to contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects. Furthermore, we will monitor the online edit-a-thon to prevent any vandalism, copyright infringement, or misinformation.
The project will contribute to the expansion of Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons by yielding free knowledge and developing more active editors, as well as improving the quality of image uploads.
To ensure sustainability, participants can stay in touch in the already created WhatsApp community and get updated on the latest Wikimedia projects, events, and workshops. This project will be a continuous one as we discover that Owo language can be preserved through oral documentation on the Wikicommons and also documentation of annual significant festivals such as the Igogo Festival. The new editors at the Owo Wikimedian Hub will be introduced to the Wikimedia Nigeria User Group to ensure continued engagement and participation in Wikimedia projects.
