6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Despite sustained efforts since 2021 to support LGBT+ participation in Wikimedia projects in Nigeria with succesul results as documented in this diff (https://diff.wikimedia.org/2025/07/02/%f0%9f%8c%88-building-bridges-with-edits-the-unfolding-story-of-lgbt-advocacy-on-wikipedia-in-nigeria/), engagement remains highly concentrated in Southern Nigeria. Queer individuals in the Northern regions face limited access to Wikimedia training and a lack of localized support structures. As a result, these communities are underrepresented as queer Wikimedia contributors, and their perspectives are largely absent from open knowledge platforms.

This project aims to address this geographic and participation gap by decentralizing queer Wikimedia training to underrepresented regions of Nigeria. The change we seek is to extend our wiki queer outreaches to northern Nigeria for a more inclusive, nationally distributed network of contributors who can participate safely and sustainably. The project will also serve as the northen edition of the succesful Queerpedia project which target only the southern Nigeria (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Alliances_Fund/Wiki_for_change_and_inclusion_in_Nigeria/Final_Report).

To achieve this, the project will implement 2 regional training programs: one to cover particpants from North West and North East Nigeria while the other other will cover participants from North Central Nigeria in partnership with trusted local LGBT+ organizations in the region. These partners will help ensure safe outreach interms of venue, partipants and implementation. Participants will receive training on Wikimedia editing, content policies, and digital safety, and will be supported to contribute to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata.

To support retention and sustainability beyond one-off trainings, trained participants will be inducted as Queer Wikimedia Fellows. Fellows will receive ongoing mentorship and act as regional multipliers, helping to raise awareness, mentor new contributors, and strengthen local Wikimedia engagement in their respective areas.

Through this approach, the project responds to urgent regional inequities in access to Wikimedia participation while building long-term community capacity aligned with the Wikimedia movement’s commitment to knowledge equity.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We are planning 3 main trainings in 3 cities of Nigeria.

North West and North Central between April 15th to 25th 2026 North Central between April 25th to 30th 2026

We are already in contact with major LGBT organizations in the all the cities that will help us to mobilize for queer participants and ensure safety. They include: Women Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equality (WISE), Obodo Nigeria, The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIERs)

1. Project planning and partnerships Identify three host states across the regions and partner with one trusted local LGBT+ organization in each location to support safe outreach, participant recruitment, and implementation.

2. Participant outreach and selection Recruit LGBT+ participants through partner organizations using secure channels, prioritizing individuals interested in open knowledge and community engagement.

3. Regional Wikimedia trainings Conduct three in-person training programs; one per region covering Wikimedia basics, Wikipedia editing, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata contributions, and digital safety and anonymity. Each training will include guided editing sessions.

4. Fellowship induction and mentorship Induct trained participants as Queer Wikimedia Fellows and provide post-training mentorship, online follow-up sessions, and technical support to encourage sustained participation and local outreach.

5. Monitoring and documentation Track participation and contributions, document lessons learned, and share outcomes on a public Wikimedia project page and through the final grant report.
