6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The Fante Wikimedians Community aims to address the marginal presence of the Fante language on the internet by increasing digital participation, awareness, and content creation and also improve editor retention. The main challenges include low awareness of the Fante Wikipedia, limited digitized historical culture (folk stories, proverbs, historical narrative) and underrepresentation of Fante in Wikimedia projects.

To overcome these challenges, we plan to engage wider communities through local radio discussions and interviews which we have already established partnership with a local radio station, raising awareness about the importance of Fante language representation online. We also aim to produce and share audio content in Fante, such as folk stories, proverbs, and historical narrative on Wikimedia Commons

Additionally, we will launch a campaign to documenting Fante culture on Wikipedia, while also recruiting new editors through outreach events and editing workshops. Our focus will be on ensuring that the Fante culture are represented and preserved in the digital space.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

We plan to record and upload over 100 audio files to Wikimedia Commons. These will include traditional folk stories, proverbs, and cultural facts in the Fante language. The audio content will be integrated into Fante Wikipedia articles to enhance accessibility and preserve oral heritage. This approach supports both digital inclusion and cultural preservation. We plan to appear on 2 local radio stations to promote the Fante Wikimedia projects. We have already established partnership with one and have appeared on one show. Find the link here. These interactive segments will inform the public about contributing to Wikipedia in Fante, and encourage participation, particularly from youth and educators. This method is effective for reaching a wide, offline audience in Fante-speaking communities.

We will organize workshops for individuals interested in contributing to the Fante Wikipedia following the radio and audio recording campaigns. This session will focus on basic editing skills, Wikimedia platforms, uploading audio and images on commons how to engage with the community long-term.
We are collaborating with local radio stations for the awareness tour, and working with Fante-speaking storytellers and language experts for the audio content.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

How effective are local radio campaigns in raising awareness and driving contributions to the Fante Wikipedia? We want to measure the reach and influence of radio engagement in motivating new users to explore or contribute to Wikimedia platforms.

What types of audio content (e.g. folk stories, proverbs, historical narratives) are most engaging for community members and contributors? This will help us tailor future content creation efforts based on community interest and cultural value.

What are the main barriers and motivations for new editors joining the Fante Wikimedia community? Understanding this will help us improve our onboarding and support strategies to retain contributors over time.

Does integrating multimedia (audio) content on Wikipedia increase user engagement and accessibility, especially for oral language communities? This insight will guide how we scale similar projects and promote inclusive contributions to Wikimedia.

How do partnerships with local institutions (e.g., schools, radio stations, storytellers) influence the success and sustainability of Wikimedia projects? This will inform our long-term community engagement and partnership strategies.
