The Fante Wikimedians Community is continuously working to address the marginal presence of the Fante language on the internet and within the Wikimedia movement. This gap limits access to free knowledge in the language and reduces the visibility of Fante Language. We maintain our goal to shift from short-term event-based engagements toward a long-term, community-driven model that supports continuous learning and our community’s overall health.
Since the completion of the translatewiki project (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Fante_Community/translatewiki.net/Report) which resulted in the translation of over 500 MediaWiki messages, progress has slowed, even though these translations are important to making Wikimedia platforms more accessible and readable in Fante. Another challenge is the low level of participation in global Wikimedia movement conversations. Many of our members are not yet connected to movement-wide discussions, which prevents them from contributing to the future direction of the movement. In addition, institutional partnerships with cultural and educational organizations remain weak, limiting opportunities for long-term support in language preservation and content sharing.
To respond to these challenges, we plan to complete our Translatewiki work so that Fante can be fully integrated into Wikimedia interfaces and offer an improved user experience. We also intend to raise the visibility of the Fante Wikipedia locally through awareness campaigns and editor engagement activities as many speakers are not yet aware of its existence or how they can contribute.
At the movement level, we will support our members to virtually participate in Wiki Indaba 2025 [1], helping them connect with the broader Wikimedia community and join shaping conversations such as Towards a Healthy Ecosystem of Wikimedia Organizations. (See our 2024 experience [2])
At the same time, we will strengthen partnerships with GLAM institutions and other local stakeholders to ensure that knowledge and cultural heritage in Fante are documented and shared openly.
Finally, we will participate in the global celebration of Wikipedia @25, an opportunity to highlight our contributions, celebrate our progress, and inspire more members of the Fante-speaking community to join the movement.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
Between November 15, 2025, and February 1, 2026, the Fante Wikimedians Community will carry out a series of targeted activities that build on our previous work while addressing the challenges we continue to face. A priority will be the completion of our Translatewiki project. To achieve this, we will work to finish the outstanding translations on translatewiki.net, ensuring that Fante is fully integrated into Wikimedia interfaces.we will organize in-person workshops and mini edit-a-thons.
To improve visibility and engagement with the Fante Wikipedia, we will launch a local awareness campaign using social media and posters in educational and cultural centers. We will also continue partnering with Radio Windbay 93.1 to host at least one live radio session introducing the Fante Wikipedia, its importance, and ways for community members to contribute. This will be complemented by an in-person workshop and a mini edit-a-thon designed to train new editors and enhance existing content on the platform.
At the movement level, our members will participate virtually in Wiki Indaba 2025. In addition to joining the sessions, we will organize a local virtual watch-and-discuss gathering, giving members an opportunity to reflect on lessons learned and strategize how these insights can be applied within our own community.
We will also continue strengthening our outreach to cultural and educational institutions, with particular focus on the Language Department of the University of Education, Winneba, and local museums. These partnerships are intended to lay the foundation for long-term collaborations on Fante language and documentation through Wikimedia projects.
As part of the global Wikipedia @25 celebrations in January 2026, we will host a small community event to highlight the contributions and progress of the Fante Wikimedians. This will also serve as a space to recruit new members and raise awareness of our role in the broader free knowledge movement.
Finally, we will maintain our commitment to community retention and peer support. This will include continuing our light mentorship program, in which experienced editors guide newcomers, alongside monthly virtual check-ins to sustain momentum. We will also keep up our “Editor of the Month” recognition initiative, which has proven effective in building community identity and encouraging consistent participation.

- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
Our program is designed to engage a diverse range of participants, including existing members of the Fante Wikimedia Community, Fante natives, and anyone who can contribute to the project in Fante. We understand the importance of maintaining communication with our participants and plan to use various platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and social media to achieve this.
To ensure continued participation and retention after the project implementation, we have developed a series of strategies. First, we will collect usernames and contact information through feedback forms to keep track of our participants. Additionally, we will offer optional mailing lists and social media groups for those interested in staying updated on future events.
We also plan to identify the most active, knowledgeable, and motivated contributors and invite them to future events, providing them with opportunities to take on leadership roles within the community. Finally, we will add new participants to the existing WhatsApp/Telegram group to encourage continued discussions and collaborations.
