Between September and November 2025, the Fante Wikimedians Community will focus on a series of strategic activities that build on past successes while introducing more sustainable, culturally grounded approaches to community engagement and content creation.

The Fante Wikimedians Community is working to create a lasting digital footprint for the Fante language and culture by increasing participation, preserving oral knowledge, and building a sustainable network of contributors. Our primary goal is to shift from short-term event-based engagements toward a long-term, community-driven model that supports continuous learning, cultural preservation, and editor retention.

One of the major challenges we face is the limited awareness and visibility of the Fante Wikipedia and its role in preserving indigenous knowledge online. Despite our outreach efforts, many Fante speakers, especially in rural and semi-urban areas remain unaware that they can contribute to global knowledge in their own language

Additionally, much of Fante culture is oral in nature, from folk tales and proverbs to community histories making it difficult to document and preserve using only written formats. This contributes to the underrepresentation of Fante language and heritage on Wikimedia platforms.

Another ongoing challenge is editor retention and skill development. While we have succeeded in recruiting many first-time contributors, sustaining their participation remains difficult due to limited digital access, inconsistent internet connectivity, lack of long-term mentorship, and competing personal or academic commitments. Our approach is centered on these key areas of change

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Between September and November 2025, the Fante Wikimedians Community will focus on a series of strategic activities that build on past successes while introducing more sustainable, culturally grounded approaches to community engagement and content creation.

One of our core activities will be the Fante Oral Heritage Recording and Upload Project, where we will record and upload over 100 audio files featuring traditional folk stories, proverbs, oral histories, and cultural expressions in the Fante language. These files will be published on Wikimedia Commons and linked to relevant articles on the Fante Wikipedia. This effort is aimed at preserving oral traditions while improving content accessibility and representation for Fante speakers, including those with limited literacy. We are working closely with Fante storytellers, linguists, and the Language Department of the University of Education, Winneba, to ensure accuracy and cultural authenticity.

To raise awareness and reach a wider offline audience, we will carry out a radio campaign and public awareness tour. We have already established partnerships with Radio Windbay 93.1 where we will host interactive radio segments discussing the Fante Wikipedia, how to contribute, and why documenting local knowledge is important. [1] These radio sessions will serve as both educational outreach and a recruitment tool for new contributors. Find project page here https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fante_Wikimedians_Community/Radio_Awareness_Tour https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fante-_Radio_Tour.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fante_Wiki_Radio_Tour_(5).jpg

Following these campaigns, we will organize in-person workshops and mini edit-a-thons. This sessions will provide hands-on training for new and existing editors on how to edit Wikipedia, upload media to Commons, and use audio content to enrich articles. Participants will also receive guidance on how to continue contributing meaningfully beyond the event. The edit-a-thon will be followed by virtual support sessions to reinforce skills and encourage retention.

As part of our commitment to community sustainability, we are continuing our light mentorship and retention program. This involves pairing new editors with more experienced contributors, providing peer support through WhatsApp, and hosting monthly virtual check-ins. We will also continue initiatives such as “Editor of the Month” to recognize active members and improve sense of belonging.

Additionally, we intend to strengthen collaborations with other Wikimedia affiliates and language communities, particularly the Wikimedia Ghana User Group, by exploring co-facilitated workshops, resource sharing, and cross-promotional campaigns. This will allow us to maximize impact while minimizing duplicated efforts and ensuring alignment with broader movement goals.

(required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Our program is designed to engage a diverse range of participants, including existing members of the Fante Wikimedia Community, Fante natives, and anyone who can contribute to the project in Fante. We understand the importance of maintaining communication with our participants and plan to use various platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and social media to achieve this.

To ensure continued participation and retention after the project implementation, we have developed a series of strategies. First, we will collect usernames and contact information through feedback forms to keep track of our participants. Additionally, we will offer optional mailing lists and social media groups for those interested in staying updated on future events.

We also plan to identify the most active, knowledgeable, and motivated contributors and invite them to future events, providing them with opportunities to take on leadership roles within the community. Finally, we will add new participants to the existing WhatsApp/Telegram group to encourage continued discussions and collaborations.
