Health editors in Nigeria previously got introduced to medical content in the wiki space through the Wiki and Health articles 2.0 which was carried out at the Univesity of Medicine, Ibadan college students including pharmacist, optometrist, medical doctors and micribiologist with 68 new articles created and 30 articles edited by 120 health editors. After the last project, The iniative, Wiki Health Africa see the need to expand the call for medical contents seeing how previous projects were focused on Nigerian editors, the fellowship is a capacity building of selected participants across different countries in Africa and inauguration of fellows of health editors in Africa, a first of it's kind.

The following are the approaches for successful fellowship program of the African health editors

Create Awareness: To drive participation, we will leverage various social media platforms, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and X (formerly Twitter), to share content and updates. We will organize public talks and outreach sessions to engage prospective participants and raise awareness about the project’s goal and the value of contributing to the Wikimedia movement.

Partnership building: Wiki Health Africa as a developing iniative recognizes the importance of building partnerships with other organizations and initiatives that share its vision and goals. This includes other health organizations like Medical World, Optometric Association, HealthForAll Initiative For Community Health, ,Africa African Centre for Global Health and Social Transformation (ACHEST), Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC), Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) among others. By building partnerships, we aim to share knowledge, resources, and best practices and amplify the impact of its initiatives.


Sustained Remote Mentorship and Peer Review: To support participants beyond the workshops, a structured mentorship system using WhatsApp, Google Meet, and asynchronous support channels will be implemented. Peer review mechanisms will help reinforce learning, and foster community accountability.

To achieve our goals and address the challenges outlined, we have planned a series of key activities that will help us investigate, strategize, and establish our organization. These activities are designed to foster discussions, gather data, build partnerships, and develop a sustainable structure for African Health editors

1. Organize focus Group Discussions and Surveys: Organize 2 community online awareness sessions and 6 focus group discussions for 30 health editors from across different regions in Africa, like East, West, North and South Africa

2. Data collation and survey of health iniatives on Wikimedia Iniative across Africa: We will hold conversations that will help us map out health iniatives that can be worked upon across Africa. engage research professionals within the Wikimedia community to lead this effort.

3. Identify opportunities for health editors in Africa: These include health professionals in Africa community, health leaders in other Wikimedia affiliates within Africa, and stakeholders participating in focus group discussions, workshops, and community sessions.

4. Partnership building: Wiki Health Africa as a developing iniative recognizes the importance of building partnerships with other organizations and initiatives that share its vision and goals. This includes other health organizations like Medical World, HealthForAll Initiative For Community Health, Mira Sight Foundation,Africa African Centre for Global Health and Social Transformation (ACHEST) and formal partnerships with Wikimedia affiliates, aimed at promoting health in Wikimedia projects. By building partnerships, we aim to share knowledge, resources, and best practices and amplify the impact of its initiatives.

5. Inauguration of fellows and award of certificate: A virtual fellow inauguration will be held for the 30 participants to lauch the first set of African health fellows on wikimedia while digital certificate will be awarded to all fellows to celebrate their milestones.

Tesleemah (Project Manager):Tesleemah is a Doctor of the Eye, practising in Nigeria. Dr Tesleemah is an Article For Creation (AFC) reviewer and new page reviewer on English Wikipedia, she has created over 113 articles on English Wikipedia main space. She is an host on Wikipedia Teahouse, a platform to help newcomers on Wikipedia. She is the only African Board member of Wiki Project Medicine. One of the participants of African growth pilot organized by the Wikimedia Foundation, she is a Certified Organiser for the organizer lab. She was the project lead of Wiki and Health articles in Nigeria 1.0 and the visibility of health articles on English Wikipedia 2.0. Dr Tesleemah is the founder of Mira Sight Foundation and has worked with different health-related organisations such as Optometry Mails, Food and Gene initiative, among others.

Her role as the Admin of a group of Medics with over 800 medical students and health professionals will help in recruiting new medical editors who will contribute towards the project. As an experienced Wikimedian who has organized and facilitated similar Wikimedia events recently, Tesleemah will play a crucial role as the project lead organizer. She will oversee the planning, coordination, and implementation of the project activities. Additionally, Tesleemah will bring her expertise to lead some of the training sessions, sharing her knowledge and insights with the participants. Her experience and familiarity with Wikipedia make her well-suited for guiding the project's overall direction and ensuring its success. Role: She is the project manager and oversees the success of the project

Taofeeq Abdulkareem: He is an experienced Wikidata editor who has held leadership positions in Wikimedia, most notably as a Special Duty Officer, and was the Vice President, Training and Development of the Wikimedia Fan Club at the University of Ilorin. He has proven talents in event management and planning in leadership positions, particularly at Wikiclimatecampustour Nigeria, University of Ilorin Physical Training, and Wikimedia Fan Club, Unilorin, Arts + Feminism 2023 Campaign. He was the project lead of Wikimedia Awareness in Ogbomosho. Role: Communication Manager

Taoheedah : She is an experienced Wikimedia Project Facilitator who facilitated Wiki Health Articles in Nigeria project featured by the Wikimedia Foundation where she coordinated the training session in bridging health content gap on Wikipedia and wikicommon. Taoheedah was a participant in the inaugural Africa Growth Pilot Cohort. During this program, she received specialized training from senior program officers at the Wikimedia Foundation, equipping her with the skills to actively engage in Wikimedia projects. Aside from Wikimedia Projects, She is the Founder of the HealthForAll Initiative For Community Health where she has led several community health campaigns and collaborated with organizations in Uganda, Ghana and Kenya where she demonstrated coordination, planning, and team planning skills in promoting healthy living. Role: Research Coordinator

The target participants are solely health editors within the Africa Wiki community who make up 80% of the total 200 and other African editors within communities where we may be lacking representatives. We will prioritize the inclusion of a maximum of 2 participants from each of the 5 regions in Africa, ensuring a balanced representation of both new and experienced Wikimedians.

The event will adhere to the Wikimedia-friendly space policy during the event. The Wikimedia-friendly space policy and UCoC will be distributed to participants before the event starts. The event also promises to be safe and conducive.

2. People aged 14 or younger will be allowed to register for the training since the target participants are health professionals in training and practice in Nigeria Mature content such as violent or sexually explicit imagery will not be displayed in public areas of the venue.

What specific barriers hinder African health editors from participating as editors within the Wikimedia movement? We want to identify the systemic and cultural obstacles that African health editors face in gaining visibility and representation.

What lessons can we learn from existing health wikimedia initiatives across Africa that can inform our strategic direction? We hope to identify best practices and successful approaches from similar initiatives to avoid redundancy and enhance our impact.

How effective are our initiatives in increasing the engagement of African health editors in Wikimedia?We will evaluate the success of our programs, workshops, and strategic discussions in empowering health editors to take on more prominent roles.
