Lagos has Nigerian pidgin as a major language of communication. We have a Nigerian pidgin Wikipedia but with little or no articles about women, especially women in folklore. We aim to address this gender gap on Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia by creating and improving content related to feminism, Folklore and women biographies as part of the global Feminism and Folklore 2025 Writing Contest. We want to emphasize underrepresented voices in Lagosian culture while preserving the richness of the Nigerian Pidgin language.

The main challenge is that we have limited representation of women on Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia articles when it comes to Feminism and Folklore. In addition to that, content in Nigerian Pidgin that is a widely spoken and culturally significant language in Lagos and Nigeria, is still underdeveloped on Naija Wikipedia. Our approach to solving these challenges is that we want to organize a skill-focused Nigerian pidgin Wikipedia training sessions to empower contributors to create accurate and culturally relevant contents. We will host editathons and writing contest to encourage participation in the events and recognize outstanding contributors with prizes and awards. We will then make sure that we sustain engagement through a mentorship program and follow-up activities within our community.

Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Our planned activities are as follows:

  • Recruitment: We will recruit participants mainly from the Wikimedians of Lagos User Group to participate in the content creation and trainings. We will invite them through our WhatsApp group and our X page. We will use social media pages to reach out to other potential participants.
  • Training: We will organize five trainings for participants on how to write articles in the Nigerian Pidgin language and how to use the Wikipedia to create and edit articles about Feminism and Folklore.
  • Content Creation: We will organize content creation sessions where participants will come together to create articles on Feminism and Folklore.
  • Review and Editing: After the content creation events, we will review and edit the articles to ensure they meet the Wikipedia standards.

The timeline for these activities are as follows:

  • Day 1: Registration (Recruitment), Introduction to Wikipedia, Wikipedia essentials, Editing basics, Group editing session
  • Day 2: Evaluating articles and sources, mainspace and drafts, hands-on practical
  • Day 3: Sources and Citations, Plagiarisms and Copyright Violation, Contributing image and media files, Group editing session
  • Day 4 & 5: Translating articles from English Wikipedia to Nigerian pidgin Wikipedia (using Visual edit, Source edit and Content Translation tools), Edit-a-thon, Writing Contests Review and Editing.
