6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The Change The following is the change we are trying to bring in this project: In this project we aim to enhance the representation of women in arts and feminism on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia project. This change focuses on increasing the quantity and quality of content about women artists, feminist movements, and notable female figures whose contributions have been historically underrepresented or overlooked. By doing so, the project seeks to close the gender content gap on Wikimedia, ensuring that women’s achievements in these fields are visible and accessible to a global audience.

The Main Challenges The following are the three main challenges we are trying to solve if it has been funded:

  • Content Gender Gap: There is a significant imbalance in the representation of women on Wikimedia projects especially in Hausa Wikimedia, especially in topics related to arts and feminism. Many notable women and their contributions remain undocumented or inadequately covered.
  • Underrepresentation of Female Editors: Women are underrepresented as contributors to Wikimedia projects, which often leads to content biases and a lack of diverse perspectives. This underrepresentation contributes to the ongoing gender content gap.
  • Lack of Accessible Information: Reliable and detailed information about women in arts and feminism is often hard to find or scattered across non-digital sources, making it difficult for contributors to create comprehensive articles.

Approaches To Achieve The Change The following are the descriptions of four approaches which will be used to achieve this change:

  • Organizing Edit-a-thons and Workshops: The project will conduct a series of three days of edit-a-thons and workshops that focus on training participants, especially women, in editing and contributing to Wikimedia projects. These sessions will provide hands-on experience in creating and expanding articles on women in arts and feminism.
  • Building a Supportive Community: The project will create a welcoming environment for new and existing editors by fostering a supportive community where participants can share knowledge, collaborate, and encourage each other in their editing efforts.
  • Providing Resources and Training: To overcome the challenge of information scarcity, the project will curate resources, including books, reliable online sources, and expert talks, to help participants find and use accurate information about women in arts and feminism.
  • Raising Awareness and Advocacy: The project will also involve outreach activities to raise awareness about the importance of documenting women’s contributions on Wikimedia projects. This includes engaging with educational institutions, cultural organizations, and local communities to highlight the value of this work.

Through these approaches, the project aims to empower more women to participate in Wikimedia projects, enrich the content available, and ultimately reduce the gender content gap on these projects.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project targets participants from the arts and feminist communities, including students, educators, and young professionals, with a particular focus on women. We will engage participants before the event through targeted outreach, social media, and by providing introductory materials and tutorials to familiarize them with Wikimedia projects.

During the activities, hands-on workshops, collaborative edit-a-thons, and interactive group sessions will encourage active participation. Facilitators will provide continuous guidance and support throughout, ensuring participants stay engaged and motivated.

After the events, we will follow up by creating an online community group where participants can receive ongoing support and mentorship. This platform will help address any challenges they face and encourage them to continue contributing to Wikimedia projects. We will also invite participants to join future Wikimedia campaigns and local Wikimedia groups to maintain long-term involvement.

11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

The project idea was thoroughly discussed with community members and relevant groups through both online and offline channels. We engaged with members of the local Wikimedia community, particularly those involved in gender equity projects such as Wiki Loves Women and Art+Feminism, to ensure that the project aligns with ongoing initiatives. Meetings were held with local Wikimedia user groups and representatives from educational institutions to gather input, refine the proposal, and ensure that the activities would meet the needs of the target audience. Additionally, we hosted discussions on relevant Wikimedia projects, such as on-wiki village pumps and mailing lists, to gather feedback and suggestions from the broader community. This helped to identify potential collaborators and ensure the project integrates smoothly with existing campaigns in the region.

I usually share my experience with my community through the following ways: Hausa Wikimedians User Group Discussion page Hausa Wikimedians User Group Discussion page and Hausa Wikimedians User Group WhatsApp Group . These discussions helped us shape the project to align with the community’s interests and needs, and we are working closely with key community members to plan and implement the activities.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

Through this project, we aim to gather insights into several key areas of community engagement, content creation, and participant retention. Our learning goals focus on understanding the effectiveness of our approaches in improving gender representation on Wikimedia projects, particularly regarding women in arts and feminism.

Here are some of the main learning questions we hope to address:

  1. We want to understand how well our training methods equip participants with the skills needed to create and edit Wikipedia articles, especially regarding underrepresented topics.
  2. We aim to learn what factors encourage participants to stay engaged with Wikimedia long-term, and whether follow-up efforts, such as online mentorship, improve retention rates.
  3. We will evaluate the role of partnerships in helping to attract a diverse group of participants and whether these collaborations strengthen the project’s overall impact.
  4. We want to identify common barriers participants encounter when editing articles about women and feminism, and determine the best strategies to overcome these challenges.

By collecting data on these learning questions, we will be better equipped to improve future projects and contribute valuable insights to the Wikimedia community about effectively closing the gender gap on Wikipedia.
