Part 1 Understanding your work
[edit]1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented
As Kurdish user group, we were pleased to apply for funding from Wikimedia for the first time. It was a good experience to do new activities, competitions and projects. Through this financial funds, we were able to organize the first ever Edit-a-thon for Kurdish Wikipedia and award the winners. The results of the competition were pleasing to us since our plan was 500 papers, but the results were more than doubled. We used the social media to engage new users as well, resulting in 37 new users registering, and 121 articles written by new users.
On the other hand, we were able to conduct the GLAM project in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Thanks to this project, we have access to some important Kurdish photos and archives that were not previously available on the Internet. For that project we hired someone as a Wikimedian in Residence. He published 1900 images and more than 100 articles during his career. After the project is completed, the Zheen Center will continue to volunteer with us. This was after the project realized the importance of contributing to Wikipedia.
2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.
The use of social media was effective in encouraging and signing up new users. At the same time, the awarding of prizes also made experienced users compete to write the most articles.
3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives | Agree |
E. Encourage the retention of editors | Agree |
F. Encourage the retention of organizers | Agree |
5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Part 2: Your main learning
[edit]6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?
1- We learned more collaborative work among organizers, because our work was not organized in that way before.
2- Overall experience of this period and making some mistakes in submitting proposals and conducting editathon (example in writing some rules of the competition and distributing the prizes. This would lead us to think and make upcoming project/activities much better.
7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?
One of the obstacles was getting the funds through Iraqi banks. This process is not impossible, but it has created many obstacles for us. However, we were able to solve the problem through our usergroup relations.
One of our targets was to upload 20,000 photos through the GLAM project, but we couldn't reach that number. In the second month of the project, we found out that Zheen Foundation could not upload that much photos by the end of the project. Consequently, we decided to keep the project but with a reduced duration and budget. This is in order to continue our relationship with the Zheen Foundation. Our work on this project enabled the foundation to volunteer to continue writing new articles on Wikipedia and uploading images.
8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?
We learned a lot of good things about collaboration and working together, dealing with groups and foundations outside Kurdish Wikipedia. Therefore, we believe that in the future, if the Kurdish user group applies for funds and announces new projects, we can do better based on learnings through this experience.
9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

Part 3: Metrics
[edit]10a. Open Metrics reporting
In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.
Open Metrics | Description | Target | Results | Comments | Methodology |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Upload to commons | We are targeted to upload at least 20000 media file related to Kurdish topics by Zheen Center | 20000 | 1900 | The number is lower than we had worked for. However, the ability of the Zheen Foundation was limited for uploading more images from their archive. In return, they decided to write articles that have published more than 100 articles to date to personalize the photos they uploaded.
After the project was completed, the Zeen Foundation decided to continue voluntarily. As of today, March 20, the number of photographs has reached 1881. |
