Grant Proposal[edit]

M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

GLAM-WIKI Training for Librarians and Archivists in Delta State

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Local

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Delta State is one of the Nine States in Niger Delta Region of Nigeria and it has rich cultural heritage that dates back to the pre-colonial era in what is today known as modern day Nigeria. Unfortunately, cultural information about the state and her people are scattered across the different information media and many of them are not in an open platform, thus making accessibility to the information difficult. The overall goal of this project is to introduce Librarians and Archivists in Delta State to GLAM-Wiki projects so they can help close the content gap about history and culture of the Deltan people which primarily consist of the Urhobos, Ukwanis, Isokos, Aniomas, Ijaws, Ikas, Aniocha-Oshimilis, Itsekiris and the Olukumi people. The project intends to create a fertile ground for partnership with cultural institutions in the state to document and digitize cultural materials for educational and preservation purposes.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

I will be partnering with Admiralty University of Nigeria Library in Delta State to carryout awareness and training of Librarians and Archivists on GLAM and Wikipedia editing so they can be better positioned to contribute useful cultural content about Delta State to the World Largest Online Encyclopedia (Wikipedia). To achieve this goal, the partner Library will be providing the training space, projector, projector screen and power for the training. I believe training Librarians and Archivists on GLAM-Wiki will be effective in preserving the cultural history of Deltans because Librarians, as information expert, are better placed to have access to cultural information in different formats, while Archivists on the other hand, have access to valuable archival materials.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

1. I will be organizing an awareness campaign prior to the training;

2. I intend to organize a physical training at Admiralty University of Nigeria in Delta State for Librarians and Archivists in the state.
3. I plan to also organize a physical edit-a-thon after the training so the participants will have the opportunity to put knowledge gained into practice.
4. I plan to create a virtual environment were online mentoring can continue after the physical training as it is not possible for the participants to learn everything in a single day.
5. I intend to prepare a list of cultural subjects and articles the participants can work on so as to ease the task on the participants.
4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Art+Feminism, Wiki Loves Africa

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Yes, I have an experienced team to undertake this project.

    • User: Nosakhare Okuons (Project Lead) is an experienced Wikimedian and a Librarian.
    • User: Omorodion1 is an experienced Wikimedian who has organized and facilitated several Wikimedia events in Nigeria. He also led a Photowalk project in Edo State to document cultural places, buildings and structures with encyclopedic value in the Wikimedia Commons. His experience as a Wikimedian and Librarian will be very useful in this project.
    • User: InspirePhotos will also bring their experience to this project.
6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Language, Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

The project is focused on increasing GLAM-Wiki and Wikipedia editing awareness in an underrepresented region (Delta State, Nigeria) and it is aimed at bridging the content gap about the history and culture of the Delta peoples which include the Urhobos, Ukwanis, Isokos, Aniomas, Ijaws, Ikas, Aniocha-Oshimilis, Itsekiris and the Olukumi people. I am hopeful that through this project, valuable cultural information/content will be added to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Education, Culture, heritage or GLAM , Advocacy

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Linguistic / Language

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

The target participants are Librarians and Archivists in Delta State of Nigeria. Interested participants will be added to a Whatsapp group were onboarding information will be shared prior to the physical training. During the training and edit-a-thon, participants will be allowed to ask questions on areas not clear. At the end of the training and edit-a-thon, they will be introduced to the wider Wikimedia Nigeria Usergroup community and the Language Communities in Nigeria.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

By upholding the Wikimedia open and safe space policies. Also encouraging participants to embrace Wikimedia policy on civility. I try to create a welcoming environment for Wikimedians so they can easily share ideas and knowledge.

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

I have announced this project in the discussion page of the Wikimedia Nigeria Usergroup as well as in the discussion page of Edo Wikimedia Hub since it is the nearest Wikimedia Community to Delta State. I have asked members for feedback and advice on the project. Aside announcing it on-Wiki, the information about the project has been brought to the attention of librarians and archivists in the state through their professional association whatsapp group.
