The Bumiayu Archaeological Site is one of the important paleoanthropological and paleontological areas in Java that holds evidence of the oldest ancient mammal migration. This site is one of the archaeological sites with an area of 66.98 km², covering 3 subdistricts in Brebes Regency, comprising Bumiayu Subdistrict (Bumiayu Village and Kalinusu Village), Tonjong Subdistrict (Galuh Timur Village and Kutamendala Village), and Bantarkawung Subdistrict (Bantarsari Village and Pengarasan Village) (Geoharitage Bumiayu, n.d.). One of the crucial saviors of field data in this area is the independent local museum owned by Mr. Nasikin in Dukuh Tengah, Galuh Timur. In this museum, valuable fossil fragments that have been independently collected since 2013 are stored. The collection is highly diverse and represents a complete ancient ecosystem, ranging from ancient elephant teeth (Stegodon trigonocephalus, Elephas hysudrindicus, Sinomastodon bumiajuensis), pig jaw fossils, vertebrate horns, to ancient mollusk specimens . Unfortunately, these important collections are currently facing major challenges: The fossil collection is currently only recorded manually and has not yet been documented in the form of scientific macro photographs with an archaeological scale. Detailed information regarding the existence of ancient elephant fossils in this local museum cannot yet be openly accessed by international researchers or the wider public due to limited digital publication. If physical damage occurs to the artifacts, the scientific data is at risk of being lost forever.
Through the "GLAM Bumiayu" project, we are implementing a Digital Cultural Heritage Preservation approach integrated with the Wikimedia ecosystem. This digital preservation effort is designed to help scientists, archaeologists, historians, and other specialists in comprehensively gathering archaeological data in order to reconstruct knowledge of the past. Nevertheless, the main challenge in realizing this digital heritage lies in the large requirement of resources, which includes financial aspects, time efficiency, and the availability of supporting technology ("Digital Heritage," 2026). To overcome these obstacles, we are implementing four main strategies:
Conducting high-quality macro photography that is scientifically precise by including an archaeological scale ruler. All documentation results will be openly distributed on Wikimedia Commons using a free license, in order to transform the status of the fossil collection from "locally isolated" to "globally accessible".
Applying photogrammetry techniques based on multi-angle photo stacking (photo alignment) to reconstruct 5 to 10 priority and rarest fossil specimens into interactive 3D models. These 3D assets will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons so that they can be explored 360 degrees by the public and global researchers.
Converting the physical catalog and taxonomic data of the museum's findings into structured data format on Wikidata. This approach was chosen because of Wikidata's ability to connect geological chronology, species taxonomy, and the geographical coordinates of the Dukuh Tengah site, thereby facilitating future global paleoanthropological research.
Enriching and developing the draft article on Indonesian Wikipedia regarding the profile of the local museum as well as the taxonomy of the related ancient mammals, based on valid literature references.
We believe this Wikimedia-based GLAM approach is the most effective because it provides a free and permanent data infrastructure platform, thereby providing a long-term solution for the sustainability of the local museum without burdening the museum owner with digital maintenance costs.

The "GLAM Bumiayu" project will be implemented in four measurable phases, spanning September to November, with a focus on intensive on-site execution over 14 full working days. A detailed day-by-day schedule is provided in the attached timeline document.
Phase 1: Pre-Fieldwork & Technical Preparation (September, Week 1) Conduct final coordination and formal licensing (sowan) with Mr. Nasikin, manager of the Bumiayu self-funded museum. Conduct technical coordination on the project workflow with the team. Prepare equipment and studio setup for the fieldwork.
Phase 2: Field Execution & Content Digitization (September, Weeks 2–3, Days 1–14) Days 1-2 (September, Week 2): Initial sorting and curation of 150 priority fossil specimens. Days 3-10 (September, Weeks 2–3): Non-destructive light cleaning of the specimens, carried out in parallel with scientific macro photography using archaeological scale rulers. During this stage, multi-angle photography (photo alignment) or 3D scanning will also be conducted on 10 selected master specimens for photogrammetry-based 3D modelling. Days 11-12 (September, Week 3): Rendering, mesh cleaning, and file-size optimization of the 3D models using photogrammetry software and Blender. Days 13-14 (September, Week 3): Mass upload of the 150 scientific photographs and the 3D model assets to Wikimedia Commons under an open license.
Phase 3: Data Structuring & Article Enrichment (Late September to October) Weeks 1-2 (September, Week 4; October, Week 1): Transform the physical catalogs and taxonomic data from field identification into structured Wikidata items, linking geological chronology, species taxonomy, and the geographic coordinates of the Dukuh Tengah site. Weeks 3-4 (October, Weeks 2–3): Draft new articles and enrich existing ones on Indonesian Wikipedia concerning the profile of the local museum and the taxonomy of related ancient mammals, based on valid scientific literature references.
Phase 4: Administration & Final Reporting (October, Week 4; November, Weeks 1-3) Compile administrative documents and the financial receipt recapitulation. Submit the official final accountability report through the Wikimedia Foundation's Fluxx portal.
Planned partnership: The core partner in this project is Mr. Nasikin, owner and manager of the independent fossil museum in Dukuh Tengah, Galuh Timur. As the holder of the collection and of essential contextual knowledge about each specimen, he will provide the project team with direct access to the fossils, on-site guidance during handling and documentation, and will, in turn, receive copies of all digital outputs (photographs and 3D models) for the museum's own long-term promotional and archival use.

Target participants and community: The primary target participant is Mr. Nasikin, owner and manager of the independent fossil museum in Dukuh Tengah, Galuh Timur Village, Tonjong Subdistrict, Brebes Regency. He holds the key contextual knowledge about the fossil collection to be digitized. The other target participants come from the Wikimedia Indonesia community, namely the project team members Rizki Hidayatulloh, Arief Catur Pamungkas, Irfan Maulana Azizy, and Agung Purba who will act as both field executors and content editors on Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and Indonesian Wikipedia.
Before the activities take place, the team's liaison (Rizki Hidayatulloh) conducts initial coordination and a direct field visit to Pak Nasikin's museum to explain the project's objectives, the principles of Wikimedia's free licensing, and to agree on safe handling procedures for the fossils during photography and photogrammetry. Internally, the team also divides roles based on each member's expertise: Rizki as team coordinator and liaison, Arief as data analyst and 3D modeller, Irfan Maulana Azizy as activity documenter and 3D modeller, and Agung Purba as data analyst and osteological analyst.

As an initial step, we plan to share information about this project through Wikimedia Indonesia's (WMID) official communication channels, such as the Telegram group and community mailing list, so that community members interested in GLAM, paleontology, or Indonesian natural history can provide input from the planning stage onward.
To ensure alignment with other ongoing activities in the planned area of implementation, we will contact Wikimedia Indonesia (WMID), as the local affiliate, to ask whether there are other GLAM projects or programs currently running in Central Java Province, particularly in Brebes Regency, so that our activities can complement one another and avoid duplication of effort.

Through the implementation of this GLAM Bumiayu project, we hope to learn the extent to which a digitization approach based on the Wikimedia ecosystem can serve as an effective and sustainable preservation solution for independent local museums with limited resources, such as Mr. Nasikin's museum. We want to understand whether this model of voluntary collaboration between the Wikimedia community and independent collection owners can be replicated to safeguard similar collections in other locations across Indonesia, without burdening museum owners with digital maintenance costs. Below are the Learning Questions we aim to answer, along with anticipated answers based on the strategies outlined in this proposal:
How effective is archaeologically scaled macro-photo documentation uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in increasing the visibility and accessibility of the local museum's fossil collection for international researchers and the general public? We anticipate that the availability of high-resolution photographs with an archaeological scale ruler will enable researchers to carry out initial morphological identification and inter-specimen comparison without needing to visit the site in person, allowing a collection that was previously known only locally to begin being cited and reused in paleontology-related articles across various Wikimedia projects.
To what extent can photogrammetry techniques be practically applied to fragile and rare fossil specimens, and what technical obstacles arise during the process of creating 3D models in the field? We anticipate that small specimens with relatively well-defined surfaces, such as molar fragments from ancient elephants, will be easier to reconstruct into 3D models than larger specimens or those with complex surface textures, and that the main technical challenges will arise in lighting setup and in maintaining the stability of fragile fossils during the multi-angle photo-capture process.
Does structuring the museum collection's taxonomic and geological data into Wikidata's structured format successfully improve the connectivity and discoverability of this data for future paleoanthropological researchers? We anticipate that the Wikidata items linking species taxonomy, geological chronology, and the coordinates of Dukuh Tengah will make it easier for researchers to identify connections between this museum's findings and data from other paleontological sites in Java, thereby accelerating cross-site comparative research.
Does the development and enrichment of Indonesian Wikipedia articles related to the Bumiayu Archaeological Site and ancient mammal taxonomy have an impact on increasing readership and the accuracy of information available online? We anticipate that the number of visits to the related articles will increase compared to the period before the project, given that this topic previously had little online reference material in Indonesian, and that the addition of scientific references within the articles will also encourage further editing interest from contributors beyond the project team.
Can this Wikimedia-based GLAM approach become a sustainable and replicable model to help other independent local museums in Indonesia digitally preserve their collections without depending on permanent funding? We will use the data collected through surveys of Mr. Nasikin and team members, upload statistics on Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata, and Wikipedia article view and edit statistics, to test the anticipated answers above and to answer these learning questions in greater depth.
