Proposal: The proposal will be implemented as a training workshop at the 36th World Congress of Audiology (WCA), taking place at CNIT, Paris La Défense, in Paris, France, from September 19th to 22nd, 2024 [1]. The WCA is the premier congress in audiology and hearing sciences, organized biennially by the International Society of Audiology (ISA) [2]. It will guided by members of Wikimedia France, Wiki Movimento Brasil and Brazilian Wikimedians, who created and manage the Hearing Health Project [3], Wiki4WorldHearingDay campaigns, educational activities, Wikiversity Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC), and graduate education research with Wikimedia projects, are generating crowdsourced knowledge in hearing health. They will collaborate with the ISA to coordinate a Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikiversity Edit-a-thon side event, based on the Global Audiology initiative [4]. This event will target researchers, students, educators, decision-makers, and hearing health professionals from various countries attending the WCA.

The Global Audiology initiative aims to address this by promoting a comprehensive understanding of these areas globally. Initiation (2016): The project began with a website and content development involving volunteers from various regions. Endorsement (2019): The initiative was endorsed and is managed by the ISA; Migration to Wikiversity (2023): Content was moved to Wikiversity, an online platform for open education and collaborative learning, to facilitate community input. The platform offers courses, tutorials, research projects, and learning resources. The Global Audiology portal provides insights into audiology education and practice worldwide, fostering networking and collaboration among hearing health stakeholders and supporting audiological development in resource-limited settings.

Changing: The proposed initiative aims to build a global network of multipliers for Wikimedia projects in hearing health. By leveraging the platform of the WCA and the actions and goals developed by the ISA in the Global Audiology initiative, we intend to foster widespread adoption and implementation of Wikimedia projects focused on audiology and hearing health, such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikiversity. Our goal is to empower key communities worldwide to utilize these projects for education, public health, and research in hearing health. The proposal will also serve as a model for the development and application of Wikimedia projects in other areas of study, research, and health promotion for populations on a global scale through open access to knowledge via Wikimedia projects.

Main Challenges: i) Capillarization and Capacity Building: The primary challenge is to effectively disseminate knowledge and build the capacity of key communities to implement Wikimedia projects in hearing health globally; ii) Awareness and Adoption: Another significant challenge is to present the vast possibilities of Wikimedia projects in a manner that encourages individuals to adopt and utilize these resources in their respective fields.

Approach: Our strategy is to organize a practical Edit-a-thon focused on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikiversity. This event will be held as programmatic event at the WCA under the title Global Audiology (https://wca2024paris.com/), aimed at researchers, students, educators, decision-makers, and hearing health professionals from various countries attending the congress. The edit-a-thon will serve as a hands-on workshop to train participants in using Wikimedia projects for their work in hearing health.

Approach Validation/Effectiveness: i) Proven Effectiveness: This approach has been successfully implemented by the Brazilian Wikimedians in various regional and international actions. Our previous experiences with organizing similar events have demonstrated that practical, hands-on training sessions are highly effective in building capacity and fostering adoption of Wikimedia projects; ii) Global Reach: By holding the event at the WCA, we can reach a diverse and international audience, maximizing the potential impact of our initiative; iii) Collaborative Potential: Collaborating with Wikimédia France and ISA enhances the credibility and reach of our project. These partnerships ensure that our event is well-integrated into the broader goals of the WCA and can leverage the expertise and networks of these organizations.

Supporting Evidence: Our approach is backed by evidence from previous successful initiatives, such as the Wiki4WorldHearingDay campaigns and educational activities (https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/campaigns/hearing_health__20222024/programs), Wikiversity MOOC (https://pt.wikiversity.org/wiki/Introdução_à_Audiologia_Básica), and funded research projects on Wikimedia projects (https://bv.fapesp.br/en/auxilios/109545/wikipedia-education-program-as-active-teaching-methodology-and-crowdsourcing-tool-in-hearing-health/). These initiatives have shown that practical training and community engagement are key to successful implementation and sustainability of Wikimedia projects in various fields. By adopting these approaches, we aim to create a sustainable and globally interconnected community of Wikimedia contributors in the field of hearing health, leading to improved education, public health, and research outcomes. Academic peer-reviewed publications related to the Hearing Health Project (https://pt.wikiversity.org/wiki/Projeto_Saúde_Auditiva/Publicações).

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Overview: We will organize at least one Edit-a-thon as a side event at the WCA (Saturday 21 from 14:00 to 15:00 CEST; Session: Introduction to Global Audiology Initiative). The presentation content will address the free knowledge ecosystem and the role of Wikimedia projects in education and global health promotion in audiology based on the Global Audiology initiative. Participants will be introduced to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikiversity through basic editing introductions, followed by hands-on content editing sessions focused on audiology topics within these projects.

Activities: i) Introduction to the Free Knowledge Ecosystem: Presentation on the importance of free knowledge in education and health promotion and overview of the Wikimedia projects and their impact on global audiology; ii) Basic Editing Training: Basic editing training for Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikiversity; iii) Hands-on Editing: Practical editing activities focused on audiology content. Guided editing for creating and improving articles and items related to audiology; iv) Edition List: Editing and creating content based on a pre-selected list of articles and items of interest. Articles will be selected from Wikipedia categories such as Sound, Hearing, Audiology, Acoustics, Otology, Ear, and Auditory System. Items on Wikidata will be pre-selected based on subclasses of sound, hearing, audiology, acoustics, otology, ear, and auditory system. Mapping and listing articles and items of interest using tools like PetScan, PagePile, Scholia, and SPARQL.

The editions on Wikipedia and Wikiversity will be mainly done in English, Portuguese, and French domains

Support: Wikimédia France (collaboration for event organization and local support). International Society of Audiology (Partnership for integrating the Edit-a-thon as a side event at the WCA and promotion and engagement with participants from the WCA.

Approach Validation/Effectiveness: Previous initiatives have shown that hands-on, practical sessions are effective in engaging participants and building their capacity to use Wikimedia projects.
